I think that was already the case when she put in for repairs! But its still some feat, surviving a dismasting in the southern ocean in the winter season there. What else could she do but activate the EPIRB. The stick is down but the boat floats, she's safe, and no doubt planning for the arrival of the tow ship. Now she rests, eats and keeps the rest of the boat in order Kudos to a 16 year old slip of a girl, living her dream encountering such adversity and to come through this with her skills, tenacity and a modicum of luck. --- On Fri, 6/11/10, john raxter <jr… [at] triad.rr.com> wrote: From: john raxter <jr… [at] triad.rr.com> Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Abby Sunderland's emergency beacon triggered To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Date: Friday, June 11, 2010, 7:52 AM Thankfully, she has been spotted, safe but dismasted. Usually the boat is scuttled... towing in 20-30' seas is dicey at best, and would rip off any fitting tied off to. It may be possible to jury rig a spar and sail at reduced speed rather then scuttle Wild Eyes. It seems a halliard jambed so she could not take in or reef her mainsail. Attempts to climb the mast were unsuccessful due to conditions. When Skip Allen let Wildflower go he was faced with the decision Abby will need to make. The rescue boat is likely to go fast enough to tow a little 40 foot boat under even if they could. I have heard of boats towing things a mile back to deal with the seas but they would still have to tow it too slow so it isn't going to happen. That boat is about as far away from home as it is possible to get. Almost exactly half way around the world. Drill through the center of the earth and the drill bit hits the boat when it comes out the other side.
