ENOUGH!
Let's get back to Cals and real sailing and leave the celebrity sailing crap to the mass media who have no clue.

David,
But...just....Wait till I get around to posting my Abby video.
Way kuel!
I thought we wuz having fun with this. Anyway, I was.
But..do I detect a little bit of macho male ego being stepped on by a "delicate" young female? Don't feel bad.
I gave up on that when I was a collegiate swimmer doing the crawl in a workout and was passed by a 14 year old gal swimming breast stroke in the lane next to me at the old Fort Lauderdale Casino chlorinated salt water swimming pool back in December of 1964...that was before they demolished it when they built the new 100 meter Swimming Hall of Fame pool in the bay, four years later, in '67. My moment of glory was diving in the pool with the rest of the swimmers there and swimming to the other end while being filmed by the old ABC show "Wide World of Sports". Oh yes, and shaking hands with Johnny Weissmuller ... better known as "Tarzan"...who was poolside.
There was a swim meet after we got out, and I watched Debbie Meyers swim the 800 meters. She went on to be the first female to win three Olympic Gold Medals, 200, 400, and 800 meters, all in record time, in one Olympics. Can you guess how old she was when she did that? Try 16.
Not unusual, you can google Shane Gould, the Ozzie who at one time held every woman's freestyle record in the world, from 50 meters to 1500 meters when she was, I believe, 15. She RETIRED FROM SWIMMING AT AGE 16! Then, there's Janet Evans...I think she copied Debbie's stroke and swim style, but she went on to medal in three consecutive Olympics.
Like I said, don't feel so bad, nothing to turn in our family jewels over.
Jerry

I met a man at Rio del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento named Bud Meyers -- Debbie's father. I'm a tennis referee and he is a swimming referee, so we had some stories to swap. But, nothing I said could compare to the life he has lead due to his daughter's swimming career. He advanced to become a national level referee and has worked Nationals, Olympics, and other major swimming events.
The part of the story that he tells makes Debbie even more accomplished. Yes, she retired from swimming, but she still felt she needed an athletic challenge, so she took up skiing -- snow skiing. She went on to win gold in a women's skiing event to become the only person ever to win gold medals in both Summer and Winter Games! She now lives in Truckee where she teaches and coaches swimming to children and also keeps her hand in skiing! Bud has lived quite a thrilling life due to the pursuit of his daughter's excellence in sports, but his motivation was purely to support her desires, not to profit from her skill and work!
Quite a contrast to Abby's parents.

PS Bud also knew Peggy Haubein who runs a swim club in Wilmington, DE and grew up as my next door neighbor in Newark, DE. Small world.

Gerry,
You're talking to a man who has three daughters. It ain't about sex, but I don't think I would have tried it in Indian Ocean winter with running backstays. Singlehanded. Not the right boat for the exppected conditions.
And again, I'm done with this.
