Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: High Winds(Allen)
When I first started racing I looked for tips and tricks anywhere I could get them. How to start, where to go, how to trim, and a bit about the rules. Books, other sailors, sail loft, just anywhere I could find info. Than one night this guy showed up at our slip and asked if I needed crew. he was watching us, my crew was my two sons ages 9 and 11. He said he sailed a Cal with his father in California. I asked him if he raced much and he said not since the last Americas Cup. We got much better very fast! Once the sails were up he was all business and enjoyed our progress. I remember two lessons learned. First and most important he said sail the boat! Get out and practice, try stuff, see what works, feel the boat, let your boys build some confidence. Second he told me sailing was an art, it was science, and sport, learn to enjoy it all. What a guy!
