That may be the case and probably is.
However, I can tell ya, boat spiders of any kind are a pain in the ass,
legs, arms etc. At first I thought is was either bed bugs or fleas left over
from the dog. Nope, spiders, tiny little buggers that I hunted down with
vigilance. Once gone, about six of them, restful dinner free nights with me
no longer being dinner.

It sounds like you hunted them down and executed each individually. Is there an effective and safe chemical method of eradication and prevention that anyone can recommend?

Wayne

What I did is wipe the entire boat down with those Javex napkins that pop
out of the lid. Did in once a week as a routine. and available at most
dollar stores. Once I started the wipe down process, not only reduced the
mildew buildup and nicely removed the nicotine build up but also made the
little buggers decide thew wanted to move. Once moving, mostly in the early
morning or evening they are easy targets. Swwwaaattt away.....with glea..:)

I keep spiders and most other "crawley" things out of my Cal 28 by placing those dryer sheets-yea, the ones to take wringles out your clothes in the dryer- inside the boat and in few days spiders are gone.... cannot stand the smell I guess.

I've seen quite a few bites that turned very ugly like the pics. One I didn't see, a woman in one of the Redwood City harbors got bitten on her backside, possibly while asleep. The resulting wound led the docs to remove a quantity of flesh the equivalent of a beer can from one cheek plus she was very sick and hospitalized. Therefore, I always bugbomb with the blue raid that fogs not sprays, then as the boat is closed and being fogged, I take a bug spray and go around all openings, window rims, etc, and any place they can hide, specifically ropes, those cleated to dock lines and down the dock lines, the anchor lines and chain, and vents. If you look closely as you're untieing a dock line or any coil, you'll see them run or jump very quickly. (not necessarily away from you). Once you've done this, you're good for a few months. If you have neighbors that never use their boats, they are going to be great hiding places. Spray their docklines too. try not to
get any in water. These particular spiders actually fly through the air with segments of web at certain times of the year. If dryer cloths do work, put them all around your bunks, clothing, ropes, tools, etc. I had a bite under an arm and I had to take medicine similar to a malaria remedy and it made me sick. The doc was unclear on the type of spider that bit but it was a huge swelling. p.s. if you just try to knock them off your boat, watch how they hang on to the thread and swim right back and climb back up. As far as the karma of bug-killing, in this case I believe in total slaughter.Helen

Wayne,
Although I have mentioned it before, we use Ortho Home Defense MAX in a hand spray bottle on Candy Cane to eliminate spiders, moths, ants, mosquitoes, etc. The spray is non-staining, nil odor, and is effective in killing and repelling those buggers. I spray around all hatches, openings, in corners, under ledges and on dock lines at launch time. I usually stay bug-free all season. If we are staying on the boat, I'll spray again for the wife's peace of mind.
Try it- you'll like it!
