Cal 29 drawings.
chris1232010-06-22 15:25 UTC
Just moving this topic to its own thread.
1. Does anyone have any verifiable information on the copyright status
of a paid drawing set for the Cal 29
2. It it is desired, and cleared by this group, I can make a set
available next week, provided someone directs me as to the best place
to do that.
Best regards
Chris H.

My Lapworth signed Cal 20 and Cal 40 drawings do not claim copyright on them.
I would think that if these are posted not as a commercial or for gain, and attributed correctly the posting might pass muster.
I believe Peggy Lapworth is still around, and someone could ask permission to post these in memory of Bill.

Exactly, that is probably the best route to go. Will contact Alfred Poore as
I think he is in contact with the Lapworth family, request permission and
follow their direction.
Thanks Tim....

Alfred has come back stating the Mrs. P Lapworth passed away in May of
this year.
Once I get them back from the shop next week, will find a place to
host the drawings. If at that point someone complains with respect to
infringement of intellectual property or copyright issues the drawings
will be removed.
My only intend is to give something back to this group in thanks of
all the support, education and learning, and respect of the work of
the designer. I hope that is not misunderstood.
Best regards and thanks.....all from me on this issue.

I would be interested in Cal 20 drawings if copy could be had.

I can host them if you can't find a better place. I will make a tab for cal

Final voyage: Roger Jones
The good old boat community lost one of its own on June 2 with the death of Roger Jones. A long-time member of the Cal list email group, Roger was well known for generously sharing his knowledge and experience. He worked for Jensen Marine when Cal production started, so he had a wealth of firsthand information. He was a friend of Cal designer William Lapworth and was instrumental in helping many Cal list members obtain copies of drawings of their boats before Lapworth's death in 2006.
Roger was an inventor and a creative thinker. He found Cal 29 hull #1, severely neglected and in great disrepair, and took it home to his backyard in Reno, Nevada, to turn it into a 21st- century Cal 29. Although it was named Swiss Navy, Roger affectionately referred to this project boat as "Swiss Cheese." After consulting with Ted Brewer, Roger cut off the aft end and designed a sugar-scoop stern. He extended the cabin aft and had plans to create a keel-stepped carbon-fiber mast. Although he was not able to complete the restoration project, it stands as a testament to his imagination.
Because Roger believed that young people are the future of our nation, he went out of his way to mentor and provide guidance for many of them. One of his pet projects was Sierra Nevada Community Sailing<http://www.nvsailing.org/> (P.O. Box 19655, Reno, NV 89511), which he founded. This group provides sailing experiences for anyone aged 8 and older. The organization is accepting donations in Roger's memory.
A number of Cal list members are helping Roger's widow, Lori, find new owners for Swiss Navy as well as for their Cal 2-30. For more information on either boat, please email Alfred Poor<mailto:ap… [at] verizon.net>.

Ahoy,
On the subject of boat plans...
I think there is an active Cal Group that still or presently exists on the old Cal List @sailnet.net site. I'm in touch with Odin Braath who worked in the Cal factory before it closed in Newport. He owned the last Cal24 built and did some modifications to it in the foredeck sailplan to balance it better. Anyway, Odin is on the cal sailnet site but not on the Yahoo one. Anyone here on both sites?
The folks that bought the sailnet internet chandlery from its original owners wanted to charge a fee to all the boat owners who wanted to remain on their respective owners lists, and that encouraged most all the then cal members to jump ship to yahoo. After that, those owners sold the sailnet chandlery to a third set of owners who don't charge to be in the owners groups. I guess if you're on both groups you could get overwhelm by all the emails and discussions? I'm sure there are a good number on the sailnet group who would like to be aware of what our group is up to and visa versa.
By the way, Odin owns both a Cal 34 and a Cal 40 (sounds somewhat familiar?). The Cal 34 is his long time family boat and the Cal 40 he acquired a several years ago is I think a work in progress.
In addition, there's a fellow named Steve Cole who was the Cal 24 club secretary back when it was a hot national fleet boat, and has given me invaluable help. When I bought my boat his phone number was in the paper work, along with a list of all the Cal 24s and their owners back in the 80's. He currently owns and races a J 30 in the Newport area and was in the Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race the first year I entered and ..lucky me...won the cruising division [I think it was in 2001]. It sure helped having 30 knot winds on the stern all the way down the Malibu Coast that year, and winds that didn't quit when the sun set and the stars rose in the sky. The next two years I entered the race the winds crapped out at 10 PM (typical) leaving me bobbing and twirling until mid morning the next day...not fun. The two 70' IOR boats I had to race against had the waterline advantage and speed to finish the race by late evening, so, I stopped doing the race. It's
only winnable for me if the winds are blasting and don't quit at night, which happens from time to time.

You got that right! Around the GGYC we got lots of recognition when we beat a 1d35 by 2s.in the spinnaker div for 2nd overall on handicap. Our 1967 Cal 20 #1114 Rambler cost less than his leward traveller block. This was with North sails that were 20 years old. When we have courses with a lot of reaching we often beat 32footers boat for boat. " Where did that damn red Cal 20 come from?" was overheard at the club by my crew's wife. It's a lot of fun to sail Good Old Boats.
We finished The Great Vallejo Race 2010 first on Sat & second on Sunday in the Shorthanded div. For an an overall first combined. We set a Peter Sutter spinnaker that was 40 years old, We may use that sail this friday at the GGYC Summer series race.
