EMS Knot Meter

Allen Edwards2010-06-30 14:11 UTC
I have an old knot meter and it started reading high. High like 10 knots when I am going 4. Erratic, useless. It worked fine just a few weeks ago. It has this expander unit that never has worked but is inline with the sender. Does anyone know if that expander is optional and can be removed? I can post pictures if that would help. I think the unit is from 1964. The sender has two wires that go to a main box. That box has power and two leads that go to the expander. 4 wires go from the expander to the display. If I need a new unit, does anyone know of one that will fit in my existing through hull? I am a couple years from my next scheduled haul out and not that interested in modernizing at this point. Moor Electronics LKD Knotmeter was:Re: [Cal_Boats] EMS Knot Meter

Maties, Anyone know anything about the Moor Electronics LKD knotmeter (saw it listed in Defender on the web)? It's pretty inexpensive, but that's relative to more expensive units. Is there such a thing as a non-paddlewheel transducer? I usually figure speed by using my 8 channel GPS (between the times it says " press page...poor satellite coverage) and listening to the sound of waves lapping against the hull. I'm also thinking of up grading to one of those fancy hi tech units using knotted dyneema chord and a wooden sea anchor, or, log, as they say. Anyone have any experience with those as well? Jerry Oh yeah, Eric and I won the cruiser division of the Jennifer Diamond Celebrity Regatta. I hadn't planned on doing well in the race, but when I saw we didn't have the usual competitors to sail against, I got my competitive juices going, plus, the one person who was going to help with the entry fee cost was too ill to race with us, tho she did show up at the dock with her contribution. Apparently we embarrassed some PHRF racers when we finished third overall in a ten mile triangle race with a down wind start, using an inverted start. Bless my old, er shall I say, ancient, 1996 ? model Garmin II, the old girl came thru for us when we needed her most, finding the windward buoy to round. I found my Cal going upwind fastest upwind with the main trimmed in tight and letting the jib luff edge flutter a bit, I guess the way you sail with a spinnaker. Who knows, we didn't take a spinnaker off set since non of the cruiser class boats were flying one, so maybe we took second overall? first? Anyway, we walked off with the PHRF division C trophy as well as the crusier class trophy (against a Catalina 34 and an Ericson 32), nice haul, but best of all was the many people who came up to us at the after race dinner to congratulate us for sailing well. Funny story. I talked to Moor and their knot meters fit my through hull, which is what I know about them. This is the unit I will get if I can't fix mine. http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/knotmeter-0-to-10-knots-self-powered-169755/4,27408.html <http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/knotmeter-0-to-10-knots-self-powered-169755/4,27408.html> Allen On Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 1:48 PM, Gerald Sobel <so… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > > > Maties, > Anyone know anything about the Moor Electronics LKD knotmeter (saw it > listed in Defender on the web)? I'm using a Moor knot/Log/Depth meter. It was on the boat when I bought it in 1987, it was probably installed in 1980. _____ From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Gerald Sobel Sent: Wednesday, June 30, 2010 3:48 PM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: Moor Electronics LKD Knotmeter was:Re: [Cal_Boats] EMS Knot Meter Maties, Anyone know anything about the Moor Electronics LKD knotmeter (saw it listed in Defender on the web)?
