Cal34 Displacement
Robert Vanderpol ii2010-07-02 17:55 UTC
I have been curious about a discrepancy in displacement I keep seeing:
The brochures for the Cal34 list 9500 for displacement.
In a lot of sales ads such as at yachtworld I see 10,200 listed.
Was the 9500 listed in the brochure to make the boat seem lighter and the real number is 10,200?
Or did somebody haul their boat have it measured at 10,200 with a lot of gear and water/fuel on board and declare this to be the value that all his friends and acquaintences started using thus passing in general acceptance?

Bob, I think you'll find that the true weights of the boats vary all over the lot. Hand lay-up, hand coating, and the lot. I'm kind of surprised the variance is only 700 pounds. I'm sure what you say may play in. Weighed the boat with a full bilge and a lot of junk.
Cheers
Charlie

Cal Boats often list multiple displacement figures. Cal 20 displacement of
first boats was listed at 1650 pounds this was changed to 1950 pounds on later
boats. Preliminary figures are calculated and until boats are made and
measured, may be way off.
My PHRF certificate under which Cal20 hull #1114 rates and races is 273 A
new downwind rating has been added for 2010, Rambler's rating d/w is 249 based
on sailing length/displacement. As sailed her displacement is 2150 pounds which
is a realistic number as she has an electrical system, offshore equipment as
required for ocean races and more fitting and strengthening than when she was
delivered in 1967
Displacement is only a number until it is used for rating or determining
the capacity of a haulout lift or transport trailer.
My Best, Mike
