what type of Impeller on 1971 Cal34 with Atomic 4 and sherwood WK8 waterpump

cozycockpit662010-07-05 20:52
Hi all, my Atomic 4 has started to overheat when I push her a bit, I find that the quantity of raw water coming out of the exhaust is not that great, I would like to change the impeller out but don't know what type and were to order one. One the water pump, it reads: Sherwood Brass WK8 Detroit Mich Can anyone tell me what number impeller to get, it would be a big help. Thanks

Cozy, How about giving us a name, this list actually uses real names. We talk to each other by name, mostly. At any rate you need to know your engine serial number, then go to Moyer Marine on the web and order the right impeller. But, based on personal experience, take the plate off, pull the impeller and shaft out. If there is a vane/blade missing stick your finger up into the outlet port and you might find it. I did. I also have a spare impeller and shaft in my spares box. The shaft and impeller are assembled, so all I have to do is pull the shaft/impeller out and shove the spare unit in. I can't magine trying to get the snap ring off in any kind of a seaway. Thanks Dave, Charles is my name, and cozycockpit is my 1971 Cal 34 mkI, i wrote moyer marine but they told me that they don't have the parts for the Sherwood pumps and advised me contact DEPCO, I sent them an email but from what your telling me I'll need to tell them more than the year of the Atomic 4 and pump cover plate number (WK8), maybe I should send them another info request with engin serial number... I thought maybe by the pump cover markings someone could have known the answer to my question. In any case, thanks for the help. but if anybody else has any more info please don't be shy to jump in. Charles, Welcome aboard! You may have to take the impeller out and visit your local marine supply house. I'm not familiar with the Sherwood pump, most A4s have the Oberdorfer. Could you change to an Oberdorfer? I'll ask my yard mechanic if they know anything. Oberdorfer with new shaft and impeller is 270 something from Moyers. One suggestion to consider, buy a new pump and keep the old one once its rebuild as a spare. The lower bolt is a real bugger to install so its worthwhile to pay extra for the extension bolt as it took me almost three hrs to install it on my boat. No fun. In this way you always have a spare once the old pump is repaired. Best of luck /ch

Charles, Welcome to the Cal group. Good luck in your search for a new impeller. Remember that overheating may come from a few sources. My last overheat problem was due to the short hose from the end of the engine to the muffler. It was a double insulated hose and the internal section collapsed inside, blocking normal flow. Not visible unless you take off the hose and check. Anyway, I'm sure you'll resolve the problem and have fun with the boat. And also, being a raw water cooled engine, the cooling passages may well be blocked with deposits that would benefit from a muriatic acid soak. I have a coule of boating friends that have done so -- I don't know the dilution or times, but someone will. Maybe Don Moyer? Its all in the manual which is a worthy investment for any A-4 owner. He recommends its every three years and describes it as a do-it-your-self maintenance item. The manual is on board so I cannot comment on the concentrations but the forum has an excellent article on it. http://www.moyermarine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127&highlight=acid+flush Best regards....cant say enough about having the manual on board. /ch
