Finally in the water, heading to Newport (hopefully)
john2010-07-13 17:31
Hello all, my wife and I bought a Cal 27 PT last year we found abandoned in a boatyard in Portland CT. Last year we did not want to spend too much time/ money on her until we made sure there were no huge problems.
This year we spent a lot of time making everything a bit nicer so we can do some weekend cruising, etc. We sewed new cushion covers, replaced lots of rotten wood (including scraping out and replacing the core of the port side ceiling in the cabin which was a horrible horrible job), scraped and painted lots (and lots!) of peeling mildewy paint in the cabin and lockers, sanded, faired, and painted the topsides, rewired pretty much everything, repaired what looked like the start of a crack on the keel where the lead meets up with the hull. All kinds of fun stuff.
Anyhow, we finally launched and this last weekend spent a pretty nice weekend heading down the CT river, with a stopover Sat night in Hamburg cove, and over to our mooring in Noank.
At the end of this month we are planning on sailing up to Newport to enjoy the folk festival from the water. If anyone has done this that can give us any pointers that would be great. I am hoping that by getting up there fairly early on Friday afternoon we will be able to find a decent spot, since I hear it can get pretty crowded.
I have been lurking around soaking up knowledge for about a year now, and I've picked up some really good advice and ideas from everyone, so thanks!

My theory is that "sweat equity," hands-on boat owners are generally
happier about boat ownership and more capable when things happen (and
they always do when sailing, no?). Congratulations on rescuing one of
our old Cals.

John and Laura,
Welome to the list and the Cal world.
Good name for your boat, I use to sail on a Cal 3-35 out of Newport Beach, Ca named Coeur D'Ore.

J&l,
Welcome to the Cal List, probably the best list on any domain. You did what many of us have done, took a wreck and re-habbed it, and it sails again. You should take a look at Good Old Boat magazine. Mine wasn't a wreck, but had some issues; and so it goes.
Regards,
