Recently purchased a 1974 2-29 - question about cabin interior
Dan Soltzberg2010-07-25 19:27
The boat hadn't been used for a couple of years, and we pulled all the cabin cushions out except for a few backrests since the canvas bottoms had become moldy. We've been airing them out at our house, and have decided not to replace them but rather just to put some easily removable rubber-backed mats and patio cushions in the boat.
I'm inclined to just throw the old cushions away, but am thinking I need to keep them to use as patterns if I ever decide to have them remade in the future to bring the boat back to its original configuration. Any suggestions? Does anyone have patterns for them? They take up a lot of space, so I'd rather not have to store them indefinitely.

If you want to use them as patterns, remove the canvas covers and let the
foam expand to the original size (if they will). Then carefully transfer
the pattern onto some craft paper and throw the cushions away. When you get
ready to make new cushions use the patterns for the fabric. A good
upholstery shop can work from the patterns, but square cushions is 1st
semester in upholstery 101. Be sure to mark the pattern with location (port
or starboard) front/back/zipper locations etc. years from the boat they may
forget where they belong.
With a good quality home sewing machine you should be able to make new
cushions yourself.

One trick upholsterers use to get the foam to its original thickness is
to use a steamer on them. The steamer is the same kind used for drapes
and whatnot. It works like magic. FYI if you decide to go that route, of
course...

I suggest getting the long roll of brown wrapping paper and cutting the pattern
to the actual stitched edges (noting that the future user will have to add the
extra 3/4 inch material for the seam) and marking them . The tops and bottoms
will be different to fit contours, so be sure to mark them as such. The future
user can then decide the thickness of the foam and cut the side strips
accordingly. The v-berth cushions should be mirror image so probably only one
set. those cushions are really tapered on the outer edges so the pattern should
be carefully followed. If you try to measure the foam, it will expand once out
of the covers. On another note, mattress/cushion makers just go make templates
drawn from whatever layout you have on the boat, same with canvas/upholstery. If
you plan to replace eventually, call a local canvas company to see what they
say. Helen
