Engine control panel
david dobbs2010-07-24 04:21 UTC
Guys,I need to replace my wooden panel this winter. I will replace the gages and add a tach. I was thinking about buying a pre-fab acrylic unit, but haven't found much on the web. I want something that will fit the opening, or close to fit. Just a standard A-4. I don't want to build something, I already have a long winter project list. I know about Tap Plastics, but I'd like something off the shelf. Thanks,David Dobbs, Cal 29 411

Need the same as mine is disintegrating with age. A simple solution may be a
piece of starboard and just drill out the appropriate holes, get a nice off
the shelf plastic case for the back to make it somewhat moisture proof was
about the most reasonable solution I could come up with. I have not been
able to find an affordable stock replacement on line. There are plastic
suppliers that will sell you recessed inserts but they all require drilling
and customization.
Do let me know if you find something else.
Best regards

Starboaard is very easy to work with and you can use 5200 to seal the
joints.
example on a Cal 9.2 to recess the Yanmar panel:

David,
Take a look at http://www.ssicustomplastics.com/everything.htm. You may find
something that will work for you.

Does anyone know a good bonding agent for starboard? Something like crazy
glue or starboard, one or two part system. This is a really nice job and
well done, the only thing I would like to eliminate is the need to screw the
panel sections together. Bonding it to glass well there are several options
at that end but gluing the board I remain clueless..:)

We had a 36CC owner on the list who has a business making/wiring the panels. Met him at the Annapolis Boat Show some years back, but can't remember his or his business' name. The letter "S" is stuck in my head, but can go no farther. Lot of help I am. Just got back from an attempted weekend regatta that was running in 100 humid temps. Guess that is why my mind is fogged. Maybe my C 25 needs a gen set and AC unit?
Cheers
Charlie

You might look at West systems "G/Flex", they claim to be able to bond to HD polyethylene.

I made a mold for the engine control panel that came out of our Cal29 Hull 74 many years ago. I used the same mold for our Cal 334 panel when it gave up to the sun. I dont think I will need it any longer. The outsde flange dim. is 7 1/4 by 12 3/4. If youare not able to lay up glass cloth with either epoxy or polyester you may need someone to do it for you. more then welcome to have it just pay the shipping. If interested I can take a pic

Dave,
Thanks for the offer, but I have a lead for a complete unit. I have enough labor intensive projects for this coming winter. Ports, propane locker, etc.
