I agree. Great to share the joy but a real rush and sense of
accomplishment to take on challenges alone and succeed. I don't have much use for people
who lead sheltered lives although compared to you and several others on
this list I have hardly been challenged as of yet.

I couldn't of said it better Sailing, biking and hiking. However, my other passion is kayaking.

When my son was applying to college, he had to write an essay on some
significant experience he had had in his 17 years of life. I asked him
what he thought the subject should be and we both decided that his
sailing to Hawaii with me the summer he was 16 would be the best
choice. He was one of a crew of seven, stood his watches, drove the
boat in the squalls and we almost won. The rest of the crew wasn't
that much older except for me and one other guy who was 30.
His high school counselor was outraged at his choice and asked him if
he really wanted to get into college. I suppose a peace march or
working in a homeless kitchen was what they had in mind. He is on the
list and may want to comment. I think that sort of counseling may have
gotten us into the situation the country is in.

By the time I was 17 my greatest challenge had been....geez, what?
Maybe taking the skateboard to school one day (inside) and getting them
banned the next day? Sailing to Hawaii would have been a BIG experience
for this kid. (Still would be for this old guy now).
Maybe he presented his choice to the counselor in an ineffective or
incomplete way, so that the inherent personal challenge wasn't evident.
I'm curious about that. Or maybe the counselor was a golfer.

Bill Snaith, whose two books on sailing across the Atlantic should be
in every sailor's library, had no more harsh epithet that to call
someone a golfer.
On the other hand, I've been playing golf since age 9 and my handicap,
when I had to give it up at age 70, was 9.

Mr. Snaith is undoubtedly a gentleman of the most acute intelligence &

I'm with you, Mike. I love to play golf and played to a 12 handicap until I bought my Cal 29. I had a driving range between work and the house an hit a bucket 3 times a week and played on the weekend. I love walking the course knowing that I don't have to cut any of the grass.
I now live on the Chesapeake Bay, sail nearly every weekend and hope to break 100 the two or three times a year that I make it to the course. I still love to play but I would rather sail. I spent too much time in Sabots and Lido 14's in front of the Balboa Pavilion and dodging the ferry. Trying to get back to my youth.

I think that it is interesting that this has begun to spark the golf/sailing
debate. I (like many of you) used to play golf regularly and very much enjoy
every moment on the course. Golf, like sailing, is a sport (activity) that one
can learn in a quick weekend but spend a lifetime attempting to master. I
always thought that these two regularly attracted people of similar
personalities for that reason.
After reading almost a year of posts here, I am under the impression that at 29
I am on the younger end of the age range of the list members. Much like the
others, I also used to play golf several times a week but since purchasing my
boat last year have seen my golf game dwindle. I still love golf but find that
any time I have a few hours to spare, I am going to the boat rather than the
course. Most of my sailing friends are of the same opinion. I am envious of a
12 handicap, but if things keep going like they are, I will be lucky to be
playing 110 at 70.
As for the counselor, I know there are good and bad. My younger brother had to
complete a open ended senior project to graduate from high school. He submitted
his journal from a 7 week sail to Maine that he completed with my father during
the summer before his senior year. He got an A+ and it was published in the
district news letter. I guess every counselor places different values on
different life events.

I was in Newport beach 10 days ago, went to the Island and walked around,
I went to Long Beach to LBYC & ABYC So many Cal 20's with smooth bottoms to
die for. I too have dodged the Balboa ferry, we had no idea of how really good
those times were. Now I dodge everything on SF Bay. In a Cal 20 nearly every
other boat has tonnage.
We make our choices. If what we do gives us reasonable pleasure it is a
good bargain.
My Best, Mike
