Hi and welcome,
I have a CAL 2-29 on the West coast, So California, we race it a lot, like every
weekend almost. I single hand it as well, when my schedule permits, I like to
get away with the gang from Santa Barbra.
I actually prefer the cleats over the self tailers.

Hi,
New owner of a Cal 29 here in Lake Champlain.
Boat is in great shape, no beam problems etc. Only real issues are the cushions
are a bit moldy and the wiring is messy (some of the electronics don't work).
To do list include reupholster, rewire, new electronics and a new rig set up for
the Jib. Right now it just has cleats next to the winch, hard to do one handed
:)
Looking forward to joining the discussion here...

@Randy
Is your cockpit hardware layout standard? I find it very difficult to do the cleats with one hand and have another on the wheel!

Barrie,
I set my Cal 24 up with cam cleats, and mounted them just below the lower edge of the cockpit bench seats so I could get maximum leverage pulling in my sheets by hand. I almost never use my winch handles, just use body weight leverage like a rower in a scull, and if need be, two or more crewmen heaving in unison to get them in, and pinch up momentarily to sheet in. It's fast, but I'm sailing one of the smallest Cals, so it wouldn't work with a 29, and of course it's great for single handing. I still have my original counter rotating brown phenolic winches with the drop in pins.
