Boat number, etc.
Phileta Riley2010-08-30 03:03 UTC
Does anyone how to find the hull number of a Cal boat? And where can I find
out how many Cal 35 MK III were made? My research has turned up nothing.
Thanks very much.

Phileta,
Don't know about your 35, but in my Cal 2-29 it is carved on a board that is mounted in the port-side cockpit locker.

I would think by 1981 the hull ID was cast on the transom as part of the hull ID "VIN" number.
Cal boats only had a few more years after 1981...

For boats of your vintage (post 1972) the hull number should be part of the Hull Identification Number (HIN) stamped into the starboard exterior stern of your boat. If you find that, read and send along, then we can interpret what the hull number is. We go through the variations on the HIN every year or so on the list. If the boat is older, then the starboard interior stern is the spot (as described below). Might be painted over. Also, drawers and various parts might have the hull number written on the bottom (or some hidden place). This is how they tracked parts during production. I doubt there are more than 100 of the 35s, but I could be wrong. As of 1982-83, they were in the 80s.
Cheers
Charlie

Bear in mind that boat builders were not always fastidious about this.
My other boat is hull #13 of her kind (hence the name applied by the
original owner, /Baker's Dozen/). But when you examine drawer
undersides and such, you find "12" or "14" here and there. Luckily for
me, that boat came with a handsome bronze builder's plate that lists the
company (Seafarer), the yard that built her and their location, (Werf
Gusto in Schiedam, Netherlands), the designer (Tripp Sr.), and the year.
My Cal 20 has the little oval unpainted spot on the starboard inside of
the transom bearing her hull number. It's so inaccessible that it was
never painted over.
