There are android devices a available with 10" touchscreens for under $200 which you can add Navionics chartplotter software for 9euros ($12). Make it splash proof with a premium quality Ziploc bag for $.50 . Not giving Garmin or Raymarine $1K, (priceless). 8-) northbrit <co… [at] compassdesigns.net> wrote: As much as I'd like a solar powered wireless TicTack syste,, it might mot be in my immediate budget :) I'd like to hear people's thoughts on the most affordable *electronic* set up for... Also, if you have an old laptop on board you can run OpenCPN (WWW.bigdumboat.com) which is free, uses free NOAA vector and raster charts, you'll need a USB GPS ($50). If you already have an Android based smartphone or iPhone itouch or ipad all you need is the $12 navionics package. Right, I have considered the ipad/phone/android/laptop option... But, I'd still have to buy all the transducers for wind/depth etc so I figure might as well get a compete system.

OK I'll bite.....which android devices are your referring too as this would be great. Then you only have to pay navionics for charts until opencpn gets ported to android. Unfortunately anytime soon. /ch On Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 10:04 AM, Wyatt Hendricks <wh… [at] avtechmed.com>wrote: > > > There are android devices a available with 10" touchscreens for under $200 > which you can add Navionics chartplotter software for 9euros ($12). I have no business interest in these devices. I think that for all of the US coastal waters requires 3 navionics packages @ 9Euros ea. US-East/Central/West http://navionics.com/MobileMarineFeatures.asp?MobileType=Android On google, amazon or ebay, search for [android tablet gps]. New units seem to be hitting the market every week. See: http://mashable.com/2010/01/27/9-upcoming-tablet-alternatives-to-the-app le-ipad/ There's a 7" unit for $155 w/GPS. A word of caution, whatever unit you get needs to be "endorsed" by Google because Navionics currently is only available via Google's Android Marketplace. Make sure it has GPS built-in. There are forums dedicated to the discussion of these devices. I am interested as well. I googled and found one but it only did GPS when connected to WiFi. The other one I found didn't state if it needed WiFi so I have to assume it won't work free standing. And make sure the built in GPS will work without WiFi. I would love a link to a unit that has stand alone GPS. I could not find one. The article on the 9 units was silent on this issue. Here is a 10 inch that specifically states it needs WiFi http://pcvision.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=87&currency=USD&utm_source=shopping.com&utm_medium=product_search&utm_campaign=shopping.com <http://pcvision.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=87&currency=USD&utm_source=shopping.com&utm_medium=product_search&utm_campaign=shopping.com>Here is a 7 inch http://www.ecrater.com/p/8313722/7-inch-apad-google-android-os that says "External GPS" What the hell does that mean? I have spent the last 20 minutes trying to find one without success. Please post a link if you have found a table with built in gps that does not require wifi or g3 to work. Google [archos 5 / 7 / 8 GPS] I'm running Navionics Mobile on my Verizon Moto Droid and I'm very impressed, Tides / Currents and download 72 hour wind predictions (wifi or 3G). SirfIII GPS I think, works without wifi or 3G. A good friend runs it on iTouch, iPhone and iPad which should make him iBroke 8-). Thanks. I was waiting for a Linux based tablet to emerge based on Intel's meego or any Linux based tablet so I can run opencpn on it. Seems that android is the current rage. Getting opencpn to work on meego is simple if you are comfortable building the dependencies from source. The latest version is quite good. See http://opencpn.org The tablet once water proofed (easily done) can easily replace a chart plotter with significantly enhanced functionality and feature set, again if you are comfortable building stuff. Thanks again, Much appreciated. /ch On Tue, Aug 31, 2010 at 10:40 AM, Wyatt Hendricks <wh… [at] avtechmed.com>wrote: > > > I have no business interest in these devices. > > > > I think that for all of the US coastal waters requires 3 navionics packages > @ 9Euros ea. As a 30+ year software engineer, Linux Kernel Geek, and general jack of all trades with computer hardware. You may want to check out http://www.junauza.com/2010/05/shogo-linux-tablet-potential-ipad.html Also opencpn.org looks very interesting. The shogo is very cool. It would seem that I may have let inet hype get the best of me. I cannot confirm the availability of a 10" android device with internal GPS in the $200 range. There are second hand Moto Droids available for around $230 and they do work with Navionics Mobile. I haven't tried Opencpn on linux but it seems like it should run atleast as well as on a wintel.
