CHRF and time on time handicap

Allen Edwards2010-09-03 20:06 UTC
Do any clubs race CHRF in their beer can series? The c&c 41 that I can match uncorrected complains that my 150 and his 85 is unfair because the courses are short. He wants to go back to the CHRF instead of the PHRF that we have been using for a couple of years. Of course, I think that my L-36 should have a higher rating and that his rating should be 75 but that just goes to show that no matter what system you use, people will complain. My observation says his troubles lie elsewhere. In any event, I got to wondering if any clubs use this other system. I googled CHRF rating system and all I can come up with is Santa Barbara. Anyone else? Anyone have an opinion on the system. As long as I am asking, someone else suggested time on time rather than time on distance. We have strange winds here where some races are in 30 kt winds, and some are in zero for a long time. I came in second this year in a 6 mile race and I lost by 45 minutes. Other times I was screaming the entire time. Would time on time help compensate for the various conditions? I want to offer some data to the racing committee about what other clubs have found with these other rating systems. Allen

Allen, I would recommend doing your homework before approaching the race committee. IMHO your competitor has done his. He has figured out that the new rating would change his success rate over yours. I think it would be easy to apply the correction based on your past event results. I would also point out to the race committee that have to learn a new "scoring process" might make "extra" work for the PRO. That might be all it takes to get them to leave things as they are. No one likes change, unless you can convince them that it will be "easier" or "less work" Use this to win your argument. Thanks for helping me with my homework. Good suggestion. My understanding is that in the past using CHRF generated tons of complaints and they are not likely to switch back. I was wondering in general if other clubs had similar experiences or even if it is used anywhere other than Santa Barbara. I found SBYC in the Google part of my homework. Anyone else want to help me with my homework?
