Labor Day Weekend
david dobbs2010-09-05 03:04 UTC
Guys,
An upside down weekend! This is normally our last big race weekend, Columbia YC holds a Friday night race from Chicago to St. Joe, Mi., 60 miles as the crow flies. They cancelled, we had gale warnings Friday night on the open lake, with 5-8 foot seas at St. Joe.
Usually big parties all day Saturday, big blowout at SJRYC in the evening. Not this year. My club usually starts a race on Sunday am back to Chicago, for about half the fleet, the remainder race down to Michigan City, In. More parties, music, etc. at MCYC Sunday night. So our RC Chair threw the schedule away and we will start a race tomorrow in Chicago, finish at Michigan City by MCYC, the usual fun will happen and we will start and finish a race Monday from MC to Chgo, 32 miles as usual. I know you ocean guys shrug at 5-8 foot seas, but I will tell you that the CG quit a search for a swimmer at St. Joe yesterday, they haven't found him yet. He's number 68 this year for Lake Michigan. Rip currents will take you straight out faster than you can believe. That's why I STAY IN THE BOAT! Well, I'm done, gotta be at the dock at 8am, first section goes off at 10, I think I am calling the line, guess I'll clean my glasses.

"I know you ocean guys shrug at 5-8 foot seas..."
Yes, sailing over 5-8 foot rollers offshore can be a blast. Depends on the wave period. When we occasionally have those heights of (very short period) waves in the shallow Chesapeake, it can be a truly brutal exercise only occurring under nasty wind conditions over a period of time. Impossible to time driving the waves consistently. A lot of slamming. I fully understand the cancellation.
May fun fill your umbrella (whatever that might mean) this weekend.
Take Care
Charlie
