low key racing for a Cal 20 on SF Bay?
bigredog82010-09-06 00:25 UTC
We have an old sail-able project type Cal 20. Its clearly not going to win any serious races, but we would be interested in some low key ones on San Francisco Bay. We have no rating, no spinnaker, and no genoa. I was thinking of a something on the order of a race a few hours long where the marks are more or less visible by sight. Winning is unimportant at this point. We sail out of Treasure Island now.
I have raced a lot, but not recently, not in this boat, and not on SF Bay.
Does anyone know of anything suitable?

Red Dog.
Some Cal 20 bay sailors including myself are planning to do
Berkeley YC midwinters as a class so we will have our own start. Also perhaps
Corinthian YC mids as a class also. Golden Gate YC Mids a possibility.
If you need some help getting ready, I can help you.
My Best, Mike

Congrats, Mike. These are the words that mean the most. Sure helps keep our respective fleets alive. CAL 25 Nationals are proceeding in Annapolis as I type. Hip keeps me out of competition, but I am at least socially (and morally?) involved. When Annapolis hosted the 1990 CAL 25 Nationals, a friend asked me how many more there might be. I said "Well, maybe one, but certainly not sure." Now 20 years and many Nationals later (and a lot of help to newer sailors)...
After 2 days (5 races), Draco Detroit 1st, Upchuck Annapolis 2nd, One Time Long Beach 3rd, Krigare Annapolis 4th. Really blowing Saturday. Shifty yesterday. Light air could really crap shoot things today. Especially with all the holiday power boat traffic churning things up (yes, they have every right to be there).

Hey Charlie,
The things that mean the most to us we MUST share. If we don't
pass on what took us so much to learn then we have done a diservice to
ourselves. I love to take young sailors of any age and impart the calm
confidence that I have come to expect of myself in 40 years at sea. Example.
About a month ago We started a beer can race with a new mast that I dock tuned
and finished 1h 5m before the start. It was 22k true from the west. I was
exhausted from the effort of outfitting the new spar. I could drive the boat.
Mallie Kennedy at one point said " Mike, Do you see him" I had not seen an IF
under the jib. I bore off and we passed, Rambler on PT.
We won the race an Maille took home the first place award. What a sea
story there.
My Best, Mike
