Re: [Cal_Boats] Kids n life jackets - HELP needed
USCG Law is that ALL children under 13 MUST be wearing a proper
USCG-Approved, proper size life Jacket at all times when on deck. Many
states have their own laws and if so the State Law prevails (on State
Waters, on Federal waters the USCG ruling prevails). Most State Laws
allow the kids to remove the PFD if below decks.

Allen, in California kids under 12 must have on a lifejacket when the
boat leaves the dock if they are on deck. It is one big ticket...friends
of ours got one of those tickets when they were putting the boat on the
trailer at lake san antonio and the kid unhooked the LJ to leave it in
the boat to get off. It held up in court. HH

Not sure what size boat you have but we used a harness instead of a life
jacket on occasion although I don't remember why. I think more because
it is safer than because the kids had any issue with the life jackets.
You might get a harness and give him the choice of the harness or the
life jacket. My comment about boat size is that if there is a chance of
capsize, perhaps the harness isn't what you want.

My 26 month old son LOVES the boat but HATES wearing a life jacket. We
have 2 of the same type, one a body glove with the crotch straps etc and
the other the same type but with Scooby Doo on it to no avail.
I am not exaggerating when I say that if you were in the boat next door
you'd swear we were pulling his fingernails out with pliers and lighting
splinters in his toenails when we put this on him. We let him scream for
30 min before giving up on it and keeping him below . . with my wife of
course.
We didn't bribe him with a lollipop but may have to next time if no one
had any other tricks they can share.
