Transducer Options
Compass2010-09-07 16:57
Following excellent advice in another email, I am going to grab a Standard CPF 180i plotter.
It uses either a ~$300 thru hull or ~$70 transom mount transducer. Is there some reason I wouldn't use the transom mount? It certainly seems cheaper and easier...

Just out of interest, the cp180i does not require a transducer as far as I
know but perhaps Ive missed something.. Are you planning on piping in depth
data via NMEA input capabilities. Or more specifically, what are your plans
for the transducer?

Depends if your selected transom mounting location is always in the water. I took a through-hull transducer and mounted it inside in a housing made of PVC pipe components. I filled it with mineral oil. It works just fine. you could try your transom mount to see if it would work. Another technique I have heard of is to bond the transducer to the hull with epoxy putty. You could try the mineral oil trick by using some 5200 to bond a plastic cup to the hull. Put some mineral oil in it and drop the transducer in. If it works you could go to a more permanent instalation.

Hmmm - as I have looked there is a depth/speed/temp trnasducer you can get
that will be used with the built in fish finder on the CPF180i
Note - CPF vs CP :)

The CPF is different form the CP.
