I appreciate all of the information about where to find the hull number and how they were set, along with the discussion that ensued.
For what it's worth, my 1970 Cal29 is not registered with the Coast Guard, was named Play Mate by the previous (and second) owner, and its sail number is 36 24 36.
I have not been down to the marina to look for the hull number yet but will add it to the database when I find it.

There is a boat on the Columbia "Gladiator" sail number 69...
