Anchor locker - Cal 2-29
James2010-09-08 16:50
Greetings everyone!
As I'm continuing to explore my soon to be '73 Cal 2-29 (hull 575), I have been looking for the anchor/rope locker. In my trips to the marinas, I have seen storage compartments for an anchor and ropes. Is there such a compartment on the Cal 2-29 or is this a future upgrade to my boat?
Thank you in advance for all responses and advice!
Happy sailing :)

On my cal 29, the anchor rode goes down a hole into a small compartment
ahead of the v-berth....

Yes, there is an anchor/rode locker in the bow of the 2-29.

Welcome to the list and your purchase of the CAL 2-29. There has been some new 29 owners added lately.
I think this is a good question, you will hear from various people with different answers amd opinions.
The anchor locker is in the bow. It is normally accessed by adding a house (sp) pipe through the deck.
I race my boat a lot and cruise less these days and never installed a house pipe. So my anchors chain and lines are in canvas duffles in the center of the boat ready for deployment. I can take out riinse evrything off and dry after a weekend at the islands.
I also like the peace of mind knowing it is not a big corroded mess up there waiting for problems.
However if I did make a real chain locker forward I would do some things different, like resin everything wood and find a way for salt water to drain over board than down the steel beam.

Randy,
I have the forward anchor locker also, and I don't use it. I keep my anchor in the port lazerette, and deploy it from there, where I can get to it when I need to, from the cockpit.
Regards,

To be specific. On the 29 there is no compartment as on Catalina's and other
boats that you open from the deck. The 29 is setup with an anchor locker in
front of the V birth that is typically accessed by means of a hole in the
deck that is covered with a variety of contraptions from standard pipe deck
fitting to cowling vents etc.
As far as anchors go, I keep a 25 lb Danforth type on the pulpit, a 10lb
lunch hook on the rear pulpit (pushpit) and a 30 lb CQR in the port locker.
The chain I'm running is approx 15 feet and its a bit too short. So at some
point will extend it to 25 feet when I replace the rode and that will be set
to 250 feet. I don't race so the weight is not troublesome and the anchors
are setup to be interchangeable on the same rode. The old rode I will keep
to use it as backup or when I need to have two hooks out.
This list is awesome. What I know about Cal's learned it from here. Its
greatly appreciated as its such a good resource. People are nice
too.......;)
Best of luck and good hunting for that new boat.
