We are 30 days from the Annapolis boat show. Not that you should trek cross country just for that. Most sailmakers offer "boat show discounts" during the fall show season. It could be worth the wait for new sails next season.

For the money you may spend on a used main would be a good down payment on a new one, this time of year you may be able to find good bargains on a new main you will be alot happier with performance.

I agree. Rather than chintzing on an old sail that might last a few years, and never be quite right, how about going to a good sailmaker (especially at a boat show or in the winter), and see what kind of deal they will give you. Sailmakers have been hurting in the last couple years, and are looking for business. Go dacron.
Then you will have a good sail that will last you many years (and it will make your boat look real spiffy).

Charlie,
I couldn't agree more. I bought a new dacron #2 from North Crusing Direct. Online. The sail is great, $1000 less than UK wanted. UK focuses on racing sailors. They make good sails, but I need value, and their price was more than I wanted to spend. Shop around, especially at boat shows, or online.
I switched from my #1 to the #2 because I am older, and sail a lot with newbies. I love it.

I recently bought a new 135% dacron roller furled, foam luff,
sunbrella, for Footloose, Cal 2-34. Priced many online. I went with
Rolly Tasker through National Sail Supply - http://www.nationalsail.com/
. On paper same or better specs than North Cruising Direct for much less
$. I had a distant memory that Cruising Direct used to not be a North
subsidiary, and their prices were better. They were middle of the pack
on pricing. Hopefully the link below will work to a shot of the sails

I use a Rolly Tasker main and 106% jib on Rambler Cal 20 #1114 in the winter
on SF Bay when the wind is 6k to 15k true. The cut and shape is good. The
quality is excellent. The construction detail is on par with Eurorean
sailmakers such as Bruce Banks The jib has stainless steel hanks for example.
The fabric is 4.5oz so above 14k true A heavier sailcloth weight is called for.
I priced a set of carbon racing sails from US Sails. My North racing sails
are getting past their prime. I have concerns re. lifespan of carbon sails vs.
Dacron. Older laminated and Kevlar material sails were good for 1 or 2
seasons before they started deteriorating performance wise and Kevlar in
particular did not like to be luffed. Don't buy something that someone else has
discarded unless there is a good reason. Don't put time and money in a sail
that "almost " fits.

Phileta, I never knew there were still so many local independent sailmakers still in the biz. I have several friends who have been laid off from sailmaker jobs in the last year, and several sailmaker operations that have folded their tents (as it were).
Take Care

I recently bought a new 135% dacron roller furled, foam luff, sunbrella, for Footloose, Cal 2-34. Priced many online. I went with Rolly Tasker through National Sail Supply - http://www.nationalsail.com/ . On paper same or better specs than North Cruising Direct for much less $. I had a distant memory that Cruising Direct used to not be a North subsidiary, and their prices were better. They were middle of the pack on pricing. Hopefully the link below will work to a shot of the sails "first wind". - Kirk

Charlie,
I couldn't agree more.
I love it.

Cheers

For the money you may spend on a used main would be a good down payment on a new one, this time of year you may be able to find good bargains on a new main you will be alot happier with performance.

I desperately need a new main for my 1971 Cal 27. Any suggestions for who has the best prices. I would really like a good used main. I am in Anacortes, WA. Thanks.
