Cal 29 info request

Greets: I may have some free time coming up and was wondering if there is some support for this. In the next week I'm proposing to purchase an appropriate domain to reflect the cal 29 that we all love and admire. As I have learned so much about this boat from this list, thanks so much for that, and as I have lots of work planned for the boat, I say planned as it will take a lot of time to complete all the needed projects, I was wondering if there is merit in putting together as informative site specifically focused on the CAL-29. There are two reasons for this project effort, (1) there is a need as far as I can tell for a centralized archive of information on the vessel, its weaknesses, strength, typical and non typical maintenance items and modifications. (2) I would hate those who are far more versed with the vessel leave without being able to tap into their knowledge base and years of experience. Searching Yahoo sucks. So I see myself more as editor rather then informed commentator and someone who can put all the needed stuff together in one place both from a technical and editorial perspective. It means asking lots of questions pertaining to the 29 on things that I cannot find through searching the archive. I hope you don't mind in advance. The corollary is that once the sites structure is build it can be used for any flavor or model of CAL. ie: the 25 seems to have quite a following. So as its not totally an independent initiative I guess I am asking for approval. A simple ya or nay or I can help should suffice. If there is enough consent, then I will get to work on it. All data on the site will be under a non-commercial share and share alike license structure to avoid any ownership disputes. In other words, I don't want to own the data, rather collect it, preserve it and share it amongst fellow enthusiasts. Best regards and many thanks -- /ch

Chris, I may be a complete 'noob' with my '29' (all of two and a bit months) but I'm learning fast, so you have my 'ya' . OK, funny, I have been thinking something VERY similar. The social community on this is great, and I have been pondering throwing out the idea of creating a website with a social network built in. Somewhere where we could all share photos, videos and discussions. Think, um, Yahoo groups but better =P. I'd be willing to offer technical weight (I own a hosting company) behind a project to create a cal site that could combine the documentary concept you describe with the social aspect I am thinking of. All we would need would be a volunteer moderator for each boat (25, 29 etc) that we wanted and then content contributers. We could start with 29 if that's where the interest is and then grow from there. Chris,, I like your idea about having a domain strictly fo the Cal 29. As with you and a hopefully a soon to be Cal 2-29 owner, it would be great to be able to find technical data relating to this great boat. I have come to appreciate all who have given their advice and wisdom in response to my questions and look forward to roam the waters of Lake Ontario and possibly beyond. I have searched the internet like you, only to find extremely limited info and especially great photos and videos of other Cal 29's in action! Recently, there was a post on this group with a link for a Cal 25 site, that has great photos, videos and technical data as well. It would be great to have one dedicated to the Cal 29. Yes, I agree that searching on Yahoo sucks. If I can be of any help, I'll be glad to listen to your ideas and thoughts. I agree, that any possible information in regards to the Cal should be archived in one central spot and would hate to see any information about the boat disappear over time. I appreciate everyone on this site, for I have even learned alot about other Cal boats as well. It was a nice pre-fall day here in Rochester, and I went down to the boat (still on the hard) to cheer myself up rather than suffer through a terrible football game. It was nice to sit in the cockpit, basking in the sun, and hopefully think of all the possibilities of having the boat in the water for next year. I even started to think that I can sail in some benefit races next year and maybe win with my boat. I went below decks and thought about the potential great times that can be had, along with making new friends around our pond, hopefully with a companion to make memories with. I read the discussion on the group about the length of sailing seasons, but took some time to reflect on that subject. Although our boats are on the hard during winter, it is an opportunity to make our boats better, whether for cruising or racing purposes. The skipper of the boat that I crew on, had lent me his bore scope and I was able to look into many of the nook and crannies of the boat, especially being able to look at the "dreaded beam". It was in great shape and realized that I could make an access plate to make it possibly easier to monitor the beam. Please feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to discuss with you any ideas offline if you want to. I like your idea! Go for it! Best regards! Chris, Let me know what info you want for the Cal 29, I may have some things of value since I've been collecting in paper and digital form. As far a dedicated domains, you might be able to strike a compromise between cost and specialization.. You could use sub-domains for each model and only buy a primary domain once. Something like lapworthboats.com/net/org (all of which are currently available) for the primary domain, then a subdomain for each model like cal29.lapworthboats.org, cal31.lapworthboats.org, etc. just a thought. A side note. Just to alleviate any concern, this will not be an effort to drive communications from the list rather the opposite. The list is and hopefully will remain the primary source for discussions, The sites design will be such that its a data dump on all thing related to the 29, in one place, coherently organized and easily searchable. There may be more as well. Communications however should remain on the list for the benefit of all. Best regards /ch
