Fuel Problem - Need Help!
John2010-09-23 18:54 UTC
Hope somebody has an idea on this one: Had the CAV fuel pump on my Volvo
Penta MD7A rebuilt 3 months ago and everything seemed fine after bleeding
and finding a small air leak on the bleed screw of the fuel filter. Labor
Day, I took it out for a sail, ran the engine for about an hour, sailed for
about an hour, and after the sail the engine wouldn't re-start (making me
think gunk in the tanks had gotten jostled up during the sail).
So, back at the dock: bled it again and got it to where it would start up,
run for about 5 seconds and then stall (regardless of throttle setting). In
an attempt to eliminate bad fuel in the tank, I took the fuel intake line
and stuck it in a can of clean diesel. Same result. So I went ahead and
replaced the fuel filter (even though I had just replaced it right before
the pump rebuild), bled the system again, and she started right up. Ran
beautifully for 10-15 minutes, so I shut her down. Attempted to start it
back up and, you guessed it, back to running for 5 seconds, then stalling.
Any ideas on where to look next would be greatly appreciated!

***** This can happen because the fuel in the return line has siphoned
back to the tank. The injectors were also drained of fuel.
The return line should have a loop that is just below the bottom of the
tank to prevent this problem.

****** Did you bleed just the pump, or the injectors also?
