Renewing non-skid deck materials

Hi Cal Pals, I have been too busy to participate of late as my Atomic 4 business has improved and I am rebuilding a 22' panga and my 25' deck boat. So, I jump into the non-skid affair with "HowIdidit" Some of you other ole folks on this list may remember back in 2000 I chose to renew the non skid on our beloved Cal Cruising 46, Satori. 1-I sanded the entire deck area, repaired all damage with West Systems epoxy, following the instructions. Allowed this to cure and gas out for about two months. 2-Realizing we could not do it all in one lay up, we divided the deck into sections, foredeck, after deck, side walkways, cockpit and "flight" deck. After proper preparation, we mixed Awlgrip polyspheres into gel coat and rolled it on with heavy knap rollers. 3- This resulted in a good looking, not too rough, but non-skid deck that looked okay for about 8 or 9 years. Maybe Charlie and some of the other Chesapeake Cal folks remember from our trip up there in 2001. 4-Now it is flaking off in big areas. ??? We had cleaned thoroughly before rolling the gel coat on. It is not flaking where we had repaired with epoxy, so dispense with that myth about gel coat over epoxy. We have tried to remember any variable that could have effected the gel coat as we took several days to do it all. Maybe it was the heat? WTH, summer in Florida is hot and there is nothing you can do about it. Next time we will wait until it's cooler. We have three seasons here in the Florida Panhandle; Too Hot, May through September Too Cold, November through March Perfect, April & October Carry On, Tom Vandiver
