I had a chance to visit aboard Tom Vandiver's 1-46 some years back when He and Bobbi toured the Chesapeake. Bill Lapworth designed purpose built boats. The purpose of this baby is distance cruising. I delightful boat. On the 1-46, the engine room is almost as big as a garage. Easy to work in there. Neat layout of bedroom forward, large cooking and dining in the middle, and the living room down the steps going aft. The large flat aft deck is suitable for parties of 20 or so. Drive the boat from inside or out. When Bill and Peggy Lapworth accepted our invitation to a CAL 25 luncheon in Annapolis in 1993, they were on their way to tour the Great Lakes in their CAL 46. Someone asked Bill what his favorite CAL was, and he responded "whichever one I am sailing". At this time, it was a CAL 46.
