What do you want or need to know about Cal 2-24's? They rate in speed about the same as a Cal 25, have a cast iron fin keel with a rectangular, wing shaped ballast bulb on the bottom. They have a narrow stern typical of IOR style boats, and a flat deck like the Cal 25, so, more head room in the V berth. I think they are nice boats. They also have a cut out in the stern for an outboard motor mount.

I own a 1969 Cal 2-24 and had a tough time finding much info when I was researching it before buying it. I love the boat and have learned a bit along the way. As noted - what do you want or need to know?

Here is a site I found, but I don't see 2-24s on it. I think the 2-24 looks almost like a CAL 25 flat deck with one window missing. I remember seeing a few in CA, but I've never seen one on the Chesapeake.

If I remember right, the CAL 24 started out as a kit boat that the do it
yourselfer could build/assemble in your back yard. The demands increased and
they became a production boat. The original boat was a flush deck. The 2-24 came
along with a raised cabin top, but the interior layout remained unchanged.
I will have to check with one of our grey beards from the club, he seems to have
bought one of the first boats, took it to the Caribbean and sailed it around for
a couple of years with a family of 4. When he tells the story, he still has that
sparkle in his eyes, remembering fun they had. It was before the tourist
industry, he is in his eighties and still sails against Dennis Connor in the
wooden boat classic on his home-built wooden design.
We also have a 2-24 racing in our wet wednesday series

Randy and Gary,
Thanks for the responses. I am starting a restoration, with sailing in between haul-outs. Keel bolts and bottom job are what is being done now. Biggest single question: crazed gelcoat all over the topside. I would like to get it right, for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Anyone with first-hand experience?

Randy,
I have one of the original kit boats, although, blessedly, she has a fiberglas vs. wooden foredeck hatch, stern hatch, companion way hatch board etc. as she is a later day kit. These are very classy boats with a traditional dog house and a wine glass convex stern. It's basically a "lowered" Lapworth 24, with a low aspect, cat boat/whale boat style keel plust pie slice centerboard to help give it more bite/ less side slip to windward
If you go to the site which has sailboatdata you'll see the boat. The last of the Cal 24 originals were factory built, they re-arranged the V berth and mast mount set up, and have fiberglass supporting the salon berths. I just found out I have a little dry rot going on in my starboard wood holding up the berth. I will check out google and see if I can find some pagan curses I can make toward wood fungus to make the situation go away.
The Cal24-2 came out a decade later, toatlly different design, in fact, it is the last of the flush deck Cals. The boat sequence for flat tops is: Gladiator, which is a flush deck Lapworth 24, Cal 28, Cal 25, Cal 24-2. Somewhere in there is the one flush deck Cal 40.
Oh yeah, there is a Cal 24 quarter tonner which came out about the same time as the Cal half ton, which is a modified Cal 27 with a non rotating gun turret or pill box stuck on top of a flush deck. I think Bill was dabbling with Confederate and Civil war iron side styling when he designed some of these boats.
