Lazy Jack Photos

Here are the photos. Hope they make things clearer. The beads are to keep everything ligned up after the system is dialed in. Someone said earlier they didn't like Lazy Jacks, as they tend to fowl the main (especially the battens). This has certainly been my experiance. One suggestion is to run the top bridal to the spreaders, therby allowing a greater spread, lest chance of fowling. The solution I'm working on is to secure the main with a continuous "zip line" that can be progresively pulled out as I raise the main, allowing me to have the Lazy Jacks retracted once the main is stowed, therfore not a fowling factor. I'll let you know how that really ends up working. Dan Wasn't ready to pull down the hamack yet. Dan

In our design, which looks really close to Dan's, the first batten fouls if the sail isn't luffing, the rest are no problem. Since our boom is an old roller-reefer and rose about 8" during hoist, I had to run the attachment point pretty low. To jiffy reef the new main, I had to secure the boom in a fixed position, so the slacked-off jacks now hang well below the boom - will have to change the cleat posn. The only real problem we've had is that 3/16 dacron line is really too stretchy to handle our stiff new main - I think I'll have to go to 1/4". In a good breeze with the boat headed up wind, the sail drops nicely into the jacks, but in a calm it tends to hang up, with the leech drooping forward. I read in GOB about running a line from the lower part of the leech, perhaps the first reef cringle, to the topping lift - when the sail is furled, the topping lift is tensioned and that pulls the leech back, causing the sail to drop straight - when the sail is raised, the tension comes off the topping lift and the leech pulls forward as normal. Apparently Hood used to sell such a system. Intend to try it. Bill Symes S/V Sara E.
