We used the coke bottle shim technique (actually, it was ginger ale 'cause I
like green) on our Cal 29 and it solve the slop in the rudder shaft problem
for years afterward. I'm pretty sure we only used them at the bottom, and
they were only a couple inches tall. It's an ideal boat repair: quick,
simple, easy to do, and best of all, essentially free.

I the whole west system epoxy and graphite bearing injection thing. I
followed their instructions carefully. My rudder was stuck for about
an hour before I got it loose. Then I used a pretty fine flapper disk
to sand it back a bit and it all worked out extremely well.
The coke bottle shim is a much easier idea on a rudder post -- unless
you have the tools to check for absolute roundness. We checked it
after we got it free, and the post was perfectly smooth and without
pits. The problem was that it was no longer perfectly round.....
