Allen/shroud covers

Yes, ours are easy to spin, the shrouds were shredding the sheets, the knots need improvement, an eye splice could be a really good move to make it slippery, but then the sheets can't be interchanged as easily. We have lots of tuneup to do before our 36 hits the race course. Helen

The idea being to have eye splices in the sheets but not permanently attached to the sail. Pardon the really dumb question but if the knot is larger then the opening which it has to be for the eye spice not to slip, how do you get the loop over the knot? Typically like my dog collar made of elongated metal links to prevent chaffing, you slip the chain back inside itself to create the loop. However, this method would not work on the foresale as you need to pass the it through the grommet opening. The eye opens up easily as there is several inches where the Amsteel splice can slide. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3tiM4dItpg <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3tiM4dItpg>Allen On Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 4:54 PM, chris123 <ch… [at] gmail.com>wrote: > > > Pardon the really dumb question but if the knot is larger then the opening > which it has to be for the eye spice not to slip, how do you get the loop > over the knot? And here is how to make them. There are easier ways to make them but I like the looks of this knot as it is big so the shackle should be more secure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH66tGsWv_Y I am going to make my first two tonight. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH66tGsWv_Y>Allen On Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 5:04 PM, Allen Edwards <al… [at] gmail.com>wrote: > The eye opens up easily as there is several inches where the Amsteel splice > can slide. > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3tiM4dItpg > > <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3tiM4dItpg>Allen > > > On Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 4:54 PM, chris123 <ch… [at] gmail.com>wrote: > >> >> >> Pardon the really dumb question but if the knot is larger then the opening >> which it has to be for the eye spice not to slip, how do you get the loop >> over the knot? OK I get it, variable loop size that holds together similar to chinese finger grip. OK Im sold. These should be easy to make and multifunctional. What kind of loads or is there a sizing/load chart somewhere? The one they have in the how-to video is their largest and it is made from 3/16 Amsteel and they rate it at 5000 pounds. YMMV. I just finished making one and have it in my hand. I had a little trouble following the knot in the video but it is a Diamond Knot and used Wikipedia as backup. The Amsteel is rated at 5400 pounds and as it is doubled up in the shackle I guess it is 5400 * 2 less the loss from the knot so 5000 sounds reasonable. Just ran some numbers here to see what strength I need. My 7/16 line is rated at 5800 pounds and a bowline is rated at 63% (thanks Google) so I have 3650 pounds. With the eye splice I have maybe 5000 pounds left and that is a perfect match for the soft shackle made with 3/16 Amsteel. It should be about 40% stronger than using a bowline. I had a line shatter once a long time ago. It is a memorable experience. I replaced all my lines after that.
