Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 28-2 vs Cal 29-2
Well Greg, a lot more 29s were built then the 28-2.
The Bill Lapworth-Designed CAL 29 was introduced in 1969 (or so) and
remained in production until around 1977 (maybe 1978), along the way CAL
upgraded the standard equipment list and made a few interior changes,
hence the 2-29 and the 3-29 which were basically still the same boat as
the original 29 (hull and deck design never really changed).
The 28-2 (model name was actually just CAL 28) was introduced in 1985 and
was designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates (John Deknatel, chief
Designer). This was an entirely new design as compared to the original
Lapworth-Designed CAL 28 (1960's), and very different from the CAL 29 as
well. This 28 was in production during the last years of CAL production
after the more or less merging of CAL and O'DAY production at O'DAY's
Fall River, MA plant. I think the last CAL 28s were built in 1987 or
1988. The design was briefly revived as the O'DAY 290 introduced in 1990
just after O'DAY production was resumed after Pearson Yachts bought the
molds and tooling. The O'DAY 290 was basically a CAL 28 with a slightly
lengthened stern, incorporating a molded-in transom step/swim platform. I
don't have any figures for production numbers on the CAL 28-2 (nor for
the CAL 29 series) but the short run of the 28-2 (3-4 years) versus the
nearly 10 year run of the 29 series would explain the greater number of
CAL 29 postings.

I have a 1986 Cal 28-2 (sail # 50) and was wondering how similar the
29-2 is. I see more mention of the 29s than the 28s. Thanks,
