Someone MUST be sailing
ira reba2010-12-05 13:51 UTC
Hello Group,
I'm escaping New England for a quick visit out west. I'll be in the San Diego
area (Cardiff) with free days on 12/9, 12/10, or 12/11. If you're going to be
sailing on any of those days, I'd appreciate an invite. Cruise, race, hanging
out and floating....doesn't matter. I'm experienced, good crew, and need a
sailing fix since my boat has been put to bed and hibernating for the winter.
Thanks,
Ira

Snow bound persons are always welcome on Mariposa. San Diego is a bit
of a stretch for you, however. With traffic, it can take 5 or 6 hours
to get to Santa Barbara.
Barring unforseen problems with my engine install, I should be ready
to sail by the weekend.

Out Patient is racing today, the last race is the county and the TGIS series.
After this it will be whale watching until March.
Yesterday, we ended up in 2nd place after the wind shut down and left us bobbing at the harbor entrance. We finished flying the drifter. We ended up 1st in series. Wooo whoooo

Congratulations, Randy! You worked hard for this series win. Fluky winds
yesterday, huh! Sailed Pangea off shore yesterday for a bit. Wind was S .... no,
E ...no, ? Just kept changing. Worst of all, however, is when the wind shuts
down completely, as it did with you yesterday. Good race. Good luck with top
"Whis points".

Hey Randy!
Congratulations on your series finish. I've been left bobbing off the
entrance to Ventura Harbor as well. Usually at about 4 AM or so....
LOL
Hope we can put together another Cal-Friendly Santa Cruz Island trip
or two this winter. Weather looks like it may not cooperate this
year, but it can be gorgeous out there after a little rain.
My new Beta 14 is going in this week. I'm taking my time and doing
everything by the book. Replaced all of the fuel and water lines and
added a strainer that Mariposa never had. Lots of fun.
Wity the engine compartment emtpy, it's always time to clean and
paint. I re-routed my fuel tank vent properly -- there was a dip in
it before that collected diesel and spewed it out when filling up at
the fuel dock. My almost new vetus water-lift wouldn't work with the
new engine so I had to fit a Vernalift back to starboard of the shaft
log. Not happy with the location and proximity to other parts that
I'll need to access from time to time, but really no other choice that
I could come up with that keeps the darned thing low enough.
Hope the holidays are kind to you. Let's keep in touch.

Reminds me of the last race of our season. We were very close to the finish
line in light winds and I wasn't sure if we had crossed. I used the radio
to ask the committee, which watches from the clubhouse through a telescope,
if we had finished. I will never forget the reply: "you have about one boat
length go and you are moving backwards." The lead boat, who we usually beat
boat for boat, finished in about 45 minutes. We finished an hour and a half
back for 4th place out of about 10 boats. It was one of our two toss outs
and we won the series as well.

Hi David,
I just looked at the results from Santa Barbara's Holiday Regatta, Angry
Hillbillies is in 3rd place. Do you know what they did today? I was 2 points
ahead of them in the channel.
I wish I would of sailed up there, today we lead the spin class against a Mull
30, Beneteau 36 1st and a Moore 24. Right at the finish, we hit a unmarked shoal
and went aground. Pictures I am sure to be posted on PCYC's website.
