Pedal powered boat to set record Atlantic crossing

This doesn't have much to do with MacGregors, but some of you might find it interesting, especially the pedaller's last comments about 'danger'. This fellow is planning to pedal a teeny tiny home made boat across the Atlantic Ocean for a speed record attempt. Jerry http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-2173268185885405078&hl=en-CA#

A guy here in northern lower Michigan decided to drive a 1930 Model A Ford as his sole form of powered transportation for a year. Then he remembered that he had a family Thanksgiving celebration south of Chicago. So he drove the Model A down and back, a 1000 mile trip. There's a 30 second video of driving on Lake Shore Drive. So far the snow has caused him no problems--in fact, the other day he passed 3 SUVs in the ditch on the way to work in his 80 year old vehicle. Here's the link to his blog: > http://www.365daysofa.com/page/1 To read the whole thing, you have to go to the lower right corner and work your way backward. Driving a Model A as your daily driver is something akin to sailing--a bit more adventurous than the common modes of travel. The guy works for Hagerty Insurance, a major insurer of classic cars and boats (but not his car, because they don't cover daily drivers). I've got their insurance on my '86 Mustang. Is this something new for him? If you go to his web site is all about crossing the Pacific to Hawaii but he gave up the idea due to how much the boat rolled in the swells - he is selling the boat now --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, Gerald Sobel <sobel_solar@...> wrote: > > This doesn't have much to do with MacGregors, but some of you might find it interesting, especially the pedaller's last comments about 'danger'. Carlos, I was wondering about the same thing. It looked to me like the boat, at 30" wide, needed some amas to keep it stable. I wonder why he didn't ad them? Kayaks with amas are very popular here in Marina del Rey, they sometimes race us up wind to the buoys during our Tuesday Nite Trials Races in our Venture MacGregor Club week day evening races. The club is a bit of a misnomer since we have now not a single MacGregor left in the Club, and one member even has a Catalina 440! I found the news on him in my Gizmag net subscription. It's sort of a Popular Science on the net, with the latest gagets and discoveries and scientific break thrus, loads of fun... I hope he redesigns the boat with some input from experts, and follows through with his original plan. There was also some mention of him pedalling his boat from California to Japan.
