I did State Farm on my CAL 25 with $6K boat coverage on top of liability for $300. Not all State Farm agents are conversant with boat coverage. Since I have a 1965 Cal 28 that only cost me $2,850, I opted for liability only. Can't remember the coverage off the top of my head. Our boats are toys. They are not indispensable and they are not appreciating investments, like our houses. They are not highly likely to be damaged, like our cars. Used ones are often available, cheap. Going uninsured ("self-insured") may make sense for many of us. Chris Campbell

I assume that is with no lay up period and being in a hurricane zone that doesn't sound bad. Who is you policy with? Paul, State Farm. They no longer write new policies. I'm grandfathered in. I have never submitted a claim. Except for maintenance Magic stays in the water year round, and we sail her just about every weekend. Thank you! Hilarious..... Don Dutton, Some Big Boat, "Some Uppity Name" PS Standing on the 3rd deck of a 140 plus foot charter boat at an obvious company holiday event a 20-something looked down on my family eating dinner in our cockpit and blithely remarked, "Our boat is way bigger than YOUR boat!" And let us remember the distinction between "going for a boat ride," which is to say, being a mere passenger, and "going sailing," which connotes participation in an adventure. It's like the difference between seeing a TV show about Venice and being there. Chris Campbell

Mike, I thought his response was more subtle (as Churchill was an accomplished politician, as well as an accomplished drinker). The one I heard was: Lady: "Sir, you are drunk!" Winston: "Madam, you are ugly!" Lady: "Sir, you are still drunk!" Winston: "Yes, but I will be quite sober in the morning." Got to leave some things to implication. Paul, Marc Carella of State Farm in Edgewater, MD has recently written me policies for my CAL 25s. I have low boat value on the policies. I do it to get liability and personal injury, and to satisfy some boat yards. I am paying a little over $300 per boat per year. For my CAL 40, I am paying Boats US $850 or so per year with a limitation to the Chesapeake. I have yet to try to get a rider on the policy to go elsewhere. That might be coming up soon for something like a Delmarva circumnavigation. Carella's office is on the right (if you are going south) on Rt. 2 just south of the South River bridge.
