Cal20 racing out in the Gulf of the Farallones
April2011-01-01 17:18
So after racing " in the bay " for five years we've decided to do the YRA's OYRA ocean series... Looks to be nine races out in the ocean including a race out to the South Faralone island and one down to Half moon bay ! Races are from 20 to 56 miles ...
Well , any suggestions ?
Happy New Year , Paul

I raced MORA in the mid 70's on a cal 2-30. The coastguard had to go out
and rescue a couple of boats with issues, one had a bent rudder post. I
was on a Cal20 headed to drakes bay, we never made it, but turned around
and surfed most of the may back. Check the boat over well for very
heavy weather and it will be a blast!

We've done a lightbucket race , out 12 miles and back and the Drakes bay 1 and 2 ( sat , up ... Sunday the way back )
Light winds and adverse tides on the way up ,,, It took 10 hours ! ! ! We got burnt pretty bad and didn't drink enough water ,,, the way back was awsome ! 97 % of the boats stayed near shore looking for landform wind ( invection ??) and we went out West because we thought the westerly would fill ,,, most of the boats dropped the spinnaker before the golden gate bridge , but I jibed in forefathom shoal ( aka potatoe patch ) and we squeezed through the north tower holding the kite to racoon straits. Sunday we corrected out 30min in front of everybody .
Both our races were in mostly calm weather, but we've raced in 40 knots inside the bay ! ( SFYC ,2010 round the island race )
We have port and starboard drains, and I enlarged the center drain by triple.. we have a half and full hatchboard and our lazerette locks down tight !
Im thinking of getting my main modified with reef points...

You can also take down the main and sail on just the jib but I really don't
like to do that unless I have to. Same, sail on just a reefed Main. SSS
transpac requires to be able to reef the Main to 40% of its normal area.

Hey Paul,
Eat Chinese food the nite before the race. Fried Rice, Egg Foo Young,
Sweet and Sour Pork , Won Ton Soup, No Bacon and Eggs! Pancakes and syrup are
a great breakfast. Poly pro underwear. Layers, layers, layers. Boots that
don't leak. Dry towels for around your neck. Wool hat too. Gloves, poly pro
and wool. Personal white strobe lite. MOB Pole, horseshoe ring that can be
deployed instantly. Safety harness 6' with caribbeaners on both ends, Really
sharp knife that can be opened with one hand while you are being towed behind
the boat Don't forget that the Bonita Chnl. can be used to gain northing,
Getting set south below the Island is a killer if you have to tack to get above
it. Stay high coming back in so you can turn down and really surf those big
mothas. Stay away from the 4 fathom bank (potato patch) I hope to join you in
some of the races in Yellow Jack if she is ready by then. The DH Farallones,
Vallejo in the pc, Etc Etc. Rambler and Coyote may go to the Vallejo YC for a
youth program. Negotiations are in progress,
As always, My Best, Mike
