Cal 40 stern tube drawing

John Courter2011-01-19 15:53 UTC
I've been looking for a drawing I believe I saw here of the details of the stern tube in the Cal 40. Anybody know where I would look for it? Thanks. John

I sent the original cal 40 line drawing odd list. Are you meaning the rudder post tube? dEmO From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of John Courter Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 7:53 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: [Cal_Boats] Cal 40 stern tube drawing I've been looking for a drawing I believe I saw here of the details of the stern tube in the Cal 40. Nope, that was it. What's actually embarrassing is that I have that set of drawings on my computer, but didn't think that they had what I was looking for. Okay – I have the drawings to scale in a drafting program, and can take scaled measurements for you if needed.. I do not know what the factory tolerances are and correctness of the actual build is - in following the plans. dEmO From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of John Courter Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 8:20 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Cal 40 stern tube drawing Nope, that was it. Thanks, but I was just looking at where the tube was in solid keel versus where the tube was out in the open. Previous owner had already replaced corroded bronze tube with a G10 tube. Something I think about once in awhile is a few years ago the set screws on the cutlass bearing came loose enough that the bearing walked up the stern tube. I assume that the engine stopped when the bearing got far enough up the tube that prop shaft whip caused all three parts to bind. I looked for damage in the stern tube and didn't see any, but sometimes I wonder if the tube is weakened in a very inaccessable part of the boat. Most likely the cutlass was still in the solid keel area where the tube is firmly glassed into the keel. The new cutlass bearing came with 4 set screws that were half length of the originals so on each side there is a set screw locking the set screw below, and I ground flats in the bearing so it doesn't depend on the points holding the bearing in place. You can see the spiral scratches in the old cutlass bearing showing that the set screws still had some bite to them. Okay so you are working with cutlass replacement, I had one “come-out” just after I purchased Cal Gal. It ruined my propeller shaft and bent a Martec feathering propeller blade and left me adrift in the Columbia River. On the reinstall, I had the Cutlass metal shell “knurled” to make sure the fit was tight, then put red Loctite on it, then used the set screws to anchor. This arrangement is the way I like the cutlass installed. I replaced the unit after 12 years, it came out easily with a sawzall, chisel, hammer and a slide hammer. There are very few things in life that will not come out easily with a sawzall, chisel, hammer, and slide hammer.
