<What about industrial strength pepper spray> What happens if they board/approach from the windward side of the boat? Not trying to be smart, but if even a little of that blows back on you it wouldn't be much fun. Not likely to get away in a sailboat in 20 min either and it may just piss them off and make them want to do worse things to you once they did catch up. Wouldn't hurt as a first line to buy time to get your gun but I personally wouldn't make it my only line of defense. Thanks - Paul

A friend of mine, a Deputy Sheriff and retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Force Recon Marine, carries a paintball gun loaded with pepper balls for his non-lethal weapon when on duty. The balls are loaded with the same type of liquid as pepper spray, but they're more accurate and have longer range. It also avoids the danger of spraying yourself accidentally either through ineptitude or wind direction. I don't know how effective this might be against pirates, just passing along information. I also have no idea what kind of reaction you'd get from authorities, having a paintball gun on your boat. The other reason he likes this weapon, which doesn't apply to us, is that if he discharges his firearm or uses his taser there's paperwork to fill out. No paperwork for pepper balls. Part of the training for boarding teams is to be sprayed across the face / eye area with military grade pepper spray. It is not fun and even less if you have to get a shower within 24 hrs after wards because the spray travels to other parts of the body. If they board the boat from the windward side, don your swim goggles. If you could disguise your spray as a deck hose down device, I bet you could get them to thing you were a real fool, get them up close so you could hose them down real good! As I recall, in the classic film 'The Sand pebbles' with Steve McQueen, they used a fire hose, or was it a steam hose??, to repell boarders. Good argument for getting rid of that smelly diesel for a nice, clean smelling double or triple expansion steam engine. Ah, African Queen! Next thing Jerry will come up with is laying a proper mini-mine field around your boat. Boy, that sure will surprise them pirates! Or, how about a flame thrower? Probably a better idea if you had a concrete or steel Cal.
