Too Cold, Going to Florida
Tom Vandiver2011-01-28 12:16 UTC
It is only 47 degrees at 0630 and it never got to 60 yesterday.
So, we are leaving Baja Alabama and driving to Florida today, Dunedin tonight
and Altamonte Springs tomorrow.
Too cold to sail our Cal 46, even with the pilot house.
Guess we should have stayed in the Keys, Mexico, Costa Rica, ....

Marathon would be fun and costs are reasonable.

Enjoy where ever you end up.

Tom and Bobbie,
High of 66 here today in Melbourne Beach, 68 tomorrow gradually heading to mid-70s by next weekend. Will be cooler inland. Earlier this week I was trying to remember why it was I lived here, but at least I'm not shovelling snow and puting chains on the truck.

Talking of ice boating, I was down at the Monmouth Boat Club last
weekend and the Ice Boat Club was out in force on the Navesink, truly
awesome, particularly liked the support 'boat' (6 wheel amphibious argocat).
In fact look so much fun we're going back this weekend to take up the
offer of a try out....can hardly wait .... will let you know how I get on

You'll be surprised to find that on an iceboat you're always
close-hauled because the apparent wind is always way forward. Sailing
downwind, you can slow down by going dead downwind and letting the sail
luff.

All, Regarding Ice Boating - this weekend and next week will be the DN World Championship and North American Champion regattas in Green Bay WI. So, the Packers may have center stage, but Ice Boating is in the neighborhood. Check them out on www.idniyra.org .

Actually, it's _ON_ Green Bay but _IN _Michigan, north of Menominee.
That's in the Upper Peninsula, way south where it meets WI. The IDNIYRA
web site has info and links on its bulletin board.

One of the best trips of my life was camping in Marathon during winter break at
the UofD! Great place! Thin water for sailboats, though!

Grea,
I thought I heard that opened up. Be careful.
I should be headed to Green Bay myself. Somewhat disappointed that I decided not to, but do have 2 days planned at Whiteface next week. If you can't sail, ski.
Just to elaborate on the comment in the other thread for the non-iceboaters and add some perspective. Regardless of what state it is actually called on for now, we still don't know that the regatta will actually start there. And if it does we don't know that it will actually finish there either. All we know for sure is that it will start and end somewhere in north america. It did look like a great plate, again, I should be on the road. And to make the rest of the list really think were really nuts (if sailing on ice at 60 mph isn't enough), this is the world championship and there will be european sailors there, but the location was only announced 48 hours ago and check in for the regatta is tomorrow night.
Just a little warning though, if you get a ride tomorrow afternoon, you may be looking for one tomorrow night.
Bob
