That is totally awesome. I got this big goofy grin watching it. It's great
to see so many people working together to tackle a big job. It looks like a
great system, and surprisingly efficient given the number of people running
around. Someone has some serious organizing chops, I think.
How much does this cost per boat? It must save the members a ton of money
compared with a commercial marina operation.

How it was done at Nepean was that a floor plan was laid out in the storage
area, basically a huge parking lot. Each boat is laid out on a grid
patterns, and hte yard is marked off with chalk and the boats name, This
takes lots of planning. Then the stands are laid out in accordance with the
boat requirements, also marked in chalk, 4-5-6 draft. Once the ballet starts
its a matter of lining the boats up at the dock, three are always in line,
and by the time the boat is lifted up in front on you, your stick it being
pulled, then pull up into the haul out dock, assist with the straps, get off
the boat, and your done. All you have to do is make sure the mast is
prepared so that it comes off easily. On site they also use two cranes but
they are much closer together, so its a real art, The same company has been
doing it for I don't know how many years now. Everyone comes out to watch,
as with our silly Canadian safety and insurance liability laws (the marina
is city operated) only city staff can be on the deck so to speak once the
action starts.
The cost for this is included in the winter storage fee if you are a member.
Pulling sticks is free and can be done by certified club members any time,
both ways.

I should add the docks are laid out by boat length. So this makes it
easier to haul, as first, all the boats over 50 line up, then 40, then
30 etc. Finally when all the boats are pulled they start of Friday and
finish late Sunday, on Monday they pull the floating docks the same
way. To the marine is completely void of anything all winter long. It
used to get pretty cold in Ottawa with temp in the -30 C in Jan -Feb
not unusual so the ice was typically a foot or more thick. Its no
longer that cold but still pretty cold in the winter. We used to have
ice roads all winter long to get across the river, which were
maintained and flooded as needed. Big short cut and time saver.

Alfred:
Just checked, boom trucks around here are 85/hr plus travel time. So
its pretty affordable if you have a mess of boats to load. Nepean is
still making money on this as they charge 135 each way times 300 boats
approx. Not bad for three days work where your only effort is to cut
the check..and sign off on the insurance waiver..: )
As its run by the City all the profit_is_reinvested into the marina.
Its a rather nice place. Not formal mind you, but nice.
