Hi folks! The days are warming up and many of us are getting ready to splash our boats again. Some of us will consider re-packing our stuffing boxes.I found this article explaining how to do it <http://www.paradiseyachtsales.net/CruisingCenter4.html>. Cheers, Mike M.

White quotation at the top of the page even if you aren't interested in stuffing boxes. My brother once was selected for a medical residency he wanted because of E.B. White. The interviewer asked "what are you reading these days?" It's kind of a trick question--are you reading anything is what it seeks. My brother said "I'm reading E.B. White's letters" (or essays, maybe). The interviewer said, "Gee, so am I," and they had a conversation. White is worth your attention. He liked boats. Today as my "retirement job" I drive an eco friendly limo for a SF Bay Area/ Boston company. My leader who hired me (no limo experience) said " I hired you because you listed Golden Gate YC Junior sailing as an activity. You are a sailor." Now after 1+ years I am second in command of Planet Tran's West Coast operations. Go Figure! Don't complain, Don't explain! British Army... 1875. "Now after 1+ years I am second in command of Planet Tran's West Coast operations. " Mike, no matter how hard one tries to get out of management, you end up back in it. I "retired" to get out of the management chain. I am a techie and now work by the hour for the same company. Have not been to a management, staffing, or finance meeting in several years. Yeah! They are aggregations of people listening to themselves expostulate and outgas. I have avoided management options for exactly the same reason as Charlie says. People wonder why I haven't joined the board of the group that runs our local schooner and related boat operations. Simple answer: I'm a lawyer and I fight for a living. I sure don't want to do it on my own time. I go sailing instead. At work, I either do something productive or something fun (sometimes they are the same thing). Freedom from meetings is an important value in life. Chris Campbell

I work in public schools (middle school band teacher) and I have NEVER walked out of a meeting saying, "Gee, I sure am glad I went to that meeting," Or, "Boy was that meeting useful." Every meeting I go to I find my self counting down the seconds that I can get back to my classroom and get work done! ... maybe that is the strategy behind the whole meetings thing. I used to work for an old time engineering firm. I was the office pup in those years and everyone else was over 60. It was a project team assembled to provide project management services to our clients. Monday morning meetings were at 0800 sharp. That's when they started. The agenda and discussion items line by line were delivered for review on Wed. As we progressed through typically over a 100 items with the clients, in 2 hrs time frame no more, each item was assessed in terms of progress, break points/risk (things that could go wrong) critical action required (things that did go wrong) and tasks for the coming week ie: milestones. Everything was documented and circulated for distribution by Tues the next day. Errors or omissions caveats applied and changes were to be delivered by Tues PM close of business. The project ran for 7 years...on budget on schedule. Monday meetings were always 2 hrs. Only on one occasion did we go longer. Needless to say the formula worked. Worked in 5 different disciplines since then and never saw anything like it again. In comparison the others were a complete was of time, as no one was ever pinned down for non performance or compliance to a spec, deliverable, timeline or cost. It can be done...and it can be done well. Always respected those old engineers and still do. Great sense of humour as well. /ch
