Hi All
It's funny how boat jobs grow on ya. What started out to be a simple bulk head repair is turning into a whole lot more. While I had the settee apart I thought I would check on the fuel and water tank.
Both turned out to be resting on the bare hull with no rubber to prevent chafe and neither were fastened down. In a role over both would have come through the settee bottom and bashed about. Not a good thing. Of course both tanks were full so I would have to drain them to remedy the problem. I managed to siphon the water tank into a bucket and pour it in the sink took a half an hour to drain the tank. When I pulled the tank out of the pocket it was in I was surprised how little wear there was where it was laying against the hull (Almost none, not bad for a boat over 45 years old). Come to think of it their way of doing things must not have been too bad after all. It is a stainless tank and looks almost new. I found Cal 30 written on the bottom of the tank (cool). I guess I will put some 1/8" rubber under them, strap them down and call it good for another 45 years.
Got to go.

I had a similar issue with the 29 in that the plastic holding tank was just forward of the water tank in the v berth and with the corners pressing against the bow. Well with 10 gallons of "S_it" in a heavy sea could not be good for the hull. It was a real fitwrights project to make an oak frame and strap setup to keep the tank about 1/2" off of the hull but do-able. I personally did not trust simply foaming it in place as some of my dock mates had suggested. Maybe its overkill and I will regret having to remove et al when the tank goes but it ain't moving till i'm ready to move it.

The holding tank I just put in the bow is like that. I have the bottom very
well supported and a tie bar across the top. It is wedged in real well but I
am still going to foam in the sides and any other empty space. One thing
this whole project made me realize is that the old girl must be stiffer then
all get out to have so little chafe on those tanks after all those years.
Comforting thought.
