sail cleaning day
richmondj502011-03-14 05:11
Hi All
Well the weather is starting to get warmer so I figured I would start getting Tink ready to sail and sell. Tink is my other boat (Olympic v 22). Spent part of the day cleaning her Jib, soaked it in Oxyclean then rinsed and hung to dry. The rinse water looked gray but it did not look like it did a whole lot of good until it started to dry. It does not look like brand new but I am impressed none the less. It is brighter and the stains that are not gone are much lighter. It did not get the rust stains out but even they look faded. Not bad for an old worn sail. Still lots of sunny relaxing days left in it to look forward to.
Keep Dreaming.

Dan,
What is oxyclean? Is it like dilute oxycylic acid? One sailmaker said to use simplegreen, a detergent like, I guess, Mr. Clean. Mr. Clean must be in style again, what with all these guys running around with shaved heads like Yul Brynner's. What about using dilute chlorine bleach?
The man with the double ugly sails,
Jerry.
PS: Maybe I should clean that old vinyl bumper goo off the starboard side of my hull while I am at it. Sometimes I think it would be cheaper to just buy another boat than fix the one I have, but, then, I'd have to clean out the junk from inside this one.

I did a lot of research before I used it, A lot of cleaners especially chlorine products will damage the resin coating or fabric of a sail. I know what you mean about cleaning it’s a never ending job I need to scrub the whole inside of Tink to prep for paint. Mildew has had a field day this winter. At least she is a small boat, not as much surface area.

Long ago I used Biz which was an enzime cleaner, I believe. Now it's off
the market for green reasons. I have used Oxyclean for 3 years now and it really
works. I use about a cupfull and fill the bathtub after local scrubbing on
really dirty areas I leaveit all nite and drain after 24hours, then I let the
sail dry in the sun.

Small sails... I hose mine down on the boat. Do you think Oxyclean would
work just scrubbing as I raise the sail and then hose it off?
My main concern is salt crystals as that is what wears out the sails. I am
less concerned with dirt although it would be nice to get the crew's blood
off the sails.

Allen, depending on crews' inclinations, OxiClean is good at both blood and wine removal. It works on organic stains. There is some soak time required, so I don't think it would do much during a hosing down.
I use it on colorfast laundry (among other things) instead of chlorine bleach. It is definitely milder (and the two should/must not be mixed), but it performs its intended purpose very well. I checked out my tubful. No ingredients listed. Apparently, however, one is not supposed to swallow it.
As an aside for all, WD-40 is great for cleaning the innards of winches.
Cheers

According to Wikkipedia oxyclean is a mix of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. I would guess it is basically so called color safe bleach. My girl friend uses Sun-something or other (Sunpower??) detergent, and I know, it tends to eat holes in my clothes (it got so bad I hated to give her regatta T shirts, cause of the way her washing would destroy them, but heck, that's the style), but that's cotton. I try to use it sparingly, but it is definitely not color safe IMHO. I would be carefull to mix it with water and dilute it well before it touches the sail cloth. My guess is also that Dacron is pretty chemical resistant stuff, anyway...but it might bleach your sail numbers!!
My guess is that well diluted Chlorine bleach is about the same thing, but maybe not. Peroxide, after all, is what we used in our youth to make our hair look more blond during the Surfer craze, which is still on, I guess.

Hi Allen,
I cleaned my Pilot 35 sails on my lawn with Biz. I made a
concentrated bucket with warm water and brushed with a deck brush both sides
after an hour or so I rinsed. It worked well. I think Oxyclean would do the
same. The sun really helps.

No Chlorine bleach is not even close to the same thing. Evan diluted it will destroy the resin coating of sail fabric and even the Dacron itself. The damage may not be apparent at the time but using chlorine will shorten the life of your sails by years. Sails are too expensive to take that kind of risk.

Oxyclean is a cleaner that uses oxygen to reduce stains , it is not a chlorine bleach and chlorine bleach will damage your sails. Do not use chlorine bleach. I would not use any acid either. You can find oxyclean in most any grocery store near the launder soap .
Dreaming of palm trees.
Dan.
Dan,
What is oxyclean?

Cheers

I checked out my tubful. No ingredients listed. Apparently, however, one is not supposed to swallow it.
Were you tempted?
