Cal 21 Keel Bolt???
Buddy Burnett2011-03-26 12:45 UTC
Greetings From South Carolina!
I recently purchased a 1970 Cal 21 Hull # 225 and I have a question J I
can't seem to locate the keel locking pin/bolt. Can anyone here tell me
The exact size? I want to make one out of brass so in case of a "hard"
grounding it will just shear off instead of doing any damage to my boat J
Thanks in advance!

I used a 1/2" bolt, but went down to a 1/4" one on the thought that if I
grounded with a tight fitting bolt I would be impossible to pull out if bent and
not sheared. I think the hole will accomodate a 5/8" one. I also found that the
hole didn't line up with the keel all the way down, and a few cranks on the
winch were required to line it up. When I dropped the keel later I found the
leading edge was damaged due to someone dropping the keel hard, thus letting the
keel go down too far before it stopped..

Thanks Beau! Already fixed it J I used a 5/8” brass pipe 8” long drilled a hole in each end dropped a locking clevis pin in each hole after install and it works just great! Thank your so much for your help and I am pretty handy so if you need anything just let me know! For its age this boat is in mint condition! It has had only 3 other owners and they were all about taking care of this boat and trailer!

I see three problems with your plan:
1) Brass will de-zincify in salt water, losing strength and causing pin failure.
2) Brass will wear quickly;
3) If you shear off your pivot bolt, how do you get home?
If you are serious about having a shear-type pivot pin, I would
suggest a Type 316L Stainless Steel or Monel (nickel-copper) round bar
machined to fit. This pin would also have two grooves machined in to
reduce the strength to allow it to break at a specific load. But you
are still left with Point #3 - how do you get back to the dock with
the swing keel dangling under the boat by the lifting cable?

Not talking about pivot bolt. Talking about keel locking pin. You may want to reread my posting :)

I'm dry sailing mine inland small lake in Louisiana and just use a cheap eye
bolt about 8" long with washers and a wing nut, gives me a nice handle to remove
it with.
Mine had to be gutted and all the interior rebuilt, as well as repairing and
refairing the keel, but it was a gift and I put some time into it, including
stripping some old peeling paint and going back with a lot of coats of Sapphire
Blue Brightsides. Sure is a big difference to sail than my old 79 Chrysler C26.
Quick little thing, sails sweet, makes me really think about looking for a
larger fixed keel Cal...

Nice paint job! I need to do it to my Pearson Resolute (20 ft) this summer.
Found it after it had been sitting on its trailer for almost 10 years. Someone
had thankfully taken the garboard drain plug so the hull is dry and not cracked
from freezing, but in need of a good cleaning.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 21 Keel Bolt???
The SV Emergency Exit Crew2011-03-27 10:28 UTC
Thanks all, the best part of the whole deal was watching the scoffs that I took
"that old thing" on turn into "if you'd like to sell it...". Yes thats an old
4.5 Merc which has now been replaced by a Tohatsu 5hp. The old Merc was just
worn out in every way. You should have a left/right "switch" on the front of the
motor below and to the left of the pull handle, if you take the cover off you
can see that it flips a cover either on or off the throat of the carb. Mine
needed the choke only when cold, but it always took a while to warm up.
If I can answer any other questions about the Merc drop me a note at
sv… [at] yahoo.com.

Not talking about pivot bolt. Talking about keel locking pin. You may want to
reread my posting :)

I see three problems with your plan:
1) Brass will de-zincify in salt water, losing strength and causing pin failure.
2) Brass will wear quickly;

I have a 4.5 like that and it runs like a champ.
I have always run it out of gas, (ie pull hose as I approach dock), to keep the carb from build up
Starts 1st pull
