I've seen them on a lot of boats too but don't recall if they were ocean going or not and don't know if they'll withstand 6" of green water over the deck. I have 2 more dorades aft so I still have some ventilation. Paul In a message dated 4/12/2011 1:23:57 P.M. They are quite substantial if and can be turned on and off from the inside in terms of air movement. However, you will get much better air flow with the dorades based on the size of the openings. I would stick with them. Actually at some point, I would like to add two to my 29 which lacks good air flow when everything is closed up. I know it doesn't make sense but that's when you need good flow rate to keep things fresh. The solar powered one is excellent in the head however where it sits. /ch

I was referring to blue water boats. Best to call the company. My buddy had two on his Erickson 35 and he travelled some 7K miles single handed down the Eastern Seaboard from Lake Ontario to Rio D via the St. Lawrence and the Canadian maritimes to Florida, Cuba etc, and then off to Honduras and back a couple of times. Lots of bad weather and he never reported any issues with them. They lasted three years, then the battery had to be replaced. However, in terms of air flow and exchange, the dorades IMHO do a better job while under way in terms of airflow. Oh, sorry, thanks for the clarification, that is good to know. Now I just need to determine how I would rig the tracks for the staysail for the cutter rig and if I need to remove them for that and how or if they will interfere with the hand rails..
