I'm not disagreeing with the air flow argument I am concerned with the potential interference with sheets for the staysail should I rig the boat as a cutter. I guess they are pretty far forward but I'll need to see them in practice. To be honest, I keep the covers on them all the time now since we mostly race and I forget about putting them on for what little cruising we do. The screens will go on the risers inside the dorade box if I keep them. That way I can still hose them out. Thanks for the input - Paul In a message dated 4/12/2011 3:35:33 P.M. That way no matter which way the wind is blowing, one is an intake and one is an exhaust. A good spray of water in the dorades with a hose when washing the boat will keep you from having wasps again. I use enough water to get the drain holes flowing steady streams, but not enough to overflow the intakes to the interior of the boat. Besides, you can't use screens on the drain holes because they will clog and the wasps can get in through the drains! Ive seen them on many boat, the solar nicro ones. They are quite substantial if and can be turned on and off from the inside in terms of air movement. However, you will get much better air flow with the dorades based on the size of the openings. I would stick with them. Actually at some point, I would like to add two to my 29 which lacks good air flow when everything is closed up. I know it doesn't make sense but that's when you need good flow rate to keep things fresh. The solar powered one is excellent in the head however where it sits. /ch

Ok...apologies...if you are primarily racing go with the nicro. Play with them at the shop prior to ordering so you get comfortable with them how they open and close. The trim ring holds them down with a half dozen screws. The only real damage you can do is step/trip/run over them. Then well there toast. Since airflow is not a factor when it comes to racing boats its probably your best choice. See here: http://www.pridemarine.com/index.cfm?category=10011|10430 Buy in the States...its cheaper..:) /ch

After breaking my plastic solar vents a half dozen times I decided to buy the nice stainless ones. I got them to the boat before finding out the stainless was a thin cover over plastic. Back to the store they went. I bought some SS pie plates on Amazon and cut a hole for the old solar panel and held them off the deck with standoffs. I can walk on them without damage. Just a thought. http://www.l-36.com/read_pic.php?file=papoose/bow_vent.jpg <http://www.l-36.com/read_pic.php?file=papoose/bow_vent.jpg>Allen On Tue, Apr 12, 2011 at 1:25 PM, chris123 <ch… [at] gmail.com>wrote: > > > Ok...apologies...if you are primarily racing go with the nicro.
