Hi all,
I will be looking at a 1966 Cal 36 is there anything in particular I
should look for.
I own a CS 27 now she sails between 4 - 5 knots on average I was
wondering what a Cal 36 will do. I looked at the sailing calulaters
and they give myme a hull speed of 6.96.

Congratulations on your purchase. Let us know when you get Fiji to Northern Calif., I would love to see her. The 36 is a great sailing boat.
Caltopia at PYC....sounds like a great idea.
Stay in touch.

I've run into a fellow who has become feed up with a project boat and will let it go for next to nothing. It is a 1968 Cal 36. He removed the engine which was an obscure manufacturer and had bought and planned to install a Yanmar 3qm30 until the yard told him that the engine was really too big and the fitting very expensive. He has had the rigging redone and the wiring changed but not connected. Sanded and painted the bottom and topsides. It is on the eastern shore of Md.. It is a beautiful boat as Bill Lapsworth designs appear to be. It is not the cruising version. The interior seems ample, the yard owners claims the hull is sound but interior needs a lot of work. The boat has promise. I have included a couple of pictures. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this boat. How are they to sail and maintain. Can it be used offshore? It weighs less than my E32. I am thinking of moving up in size. Would it be worth the trouble. If I choose not to get her, would anyone be interested on taking her on?

She looks like a mini-40 and seems to have a very nice paint job. I
think the yard is trying to hustle something because a Yanmar 3gm is not
too big for a 36. Sounds like they were trying to hustle the big(ger)
bucks. Modifying the exhaust system will be a pain but no more so than
for any other engine If the rig is sound and winches all there, you may
have yourself a winner. IF you aren't afraid of a little work and can
spare the time to do it.

The 3QM engine is a big chunk of iron, [ not built for several decades ]
not to be confused with the much smaller and lighter 3GM series engines.

Ah. Thought that was a typo, but you're right; the 3QM is a lot bigger
than the 3GM. I've only seen a couple and they were old saltwater cooled
chunks of rust. On the bright side, maybe he can convert the engine for
use on his lawn tractor?

The old Yanmar QM series [ 2 and 3 cylinder engines ] had the common
fault of cracking heads. An uncracked head is worth $, as no new heads
are available from Yanmar. The QM series were available in raw water and
fresh water cooled versions.
We have sold several new Beta Marine engines to replace the old QM
series engines, due to the head cracking / no new heads available problem.

So since the PO was planning on installing it as a replacement engine,
it may be in good enough shape to be sold or used as a trade to offset
the cost of a newer, better engine?
On a side note but semi-related; I had the privilege of being invited to
sail aboard /Moonshadow,/ a Cal-34, before and after she had your Beta
Marine engine installed and the difference in performance was
astounding! It just purrs.

****** Yes, there is a demand for the old QM series engines. However,
finding one without a cracked head can be a challenge.

****** Modern diesel technology is amazing, the engines just get
smoother, quieter, smaller, more powerful, lighter, more fuel efficient,
etc.
As an example, the 3QM engine of 30 horsepower weighs over 500 pounds.
The Beta 30 engine weighs 330 pounds, and produces the same horsepower
from a much smaller package.

Hello done,
They are great boats, good sailing, comfortable and they will surf. Definately a "keeper". Many have raced Transpac, cruised Mexico and beyond. Hull # 1 Rosebud just did the Ba Ha Ha this year San Diego to Cabo San Lucus. Go to the Yahoo Groups site to see photos (lots) of several 36s.
Cheers

The 36 is very much like a 40 that's had it's callipygian stern tucked. As I recall, the interior space is much the same between the two, and the sailing characteristic are similar. 36 has smaller cockpit. Someone (Fin?) once explained why the 36 has a double spreader rig, but I have forgotten the rationale.

Hello done,
They are great boats, good sailing, comfortable and they will surf. Definately a "keeper". Many have raced Transpac, cruised Mexico and beyond. Hull # 1 Rosebud just did the Ba Ha Ha this year San Diego to Cabo San Lucus. Go to the Yahoo Groups site to see photos (lots) of several 36s.

I think the 36 has a lighter mast section than the 40. I'm told the Cruising 36 went back to the 40's mast section and it also is a single spreader rig, vs the double spreader rig of the standard 36.

The 36 does have a smaller section, I've heard same as the 34. Also chainplates are inboard along the house so it has a shallow angle.

cal 36
do… [at] usa.com2011-04-21 01:01 UTC
I finally saw the boat yesterday. The hull is really beautiful. New bottom
paint, decent topsides and no blisters or soft spots. Once I got on deck it
was a whole other story. Huge holes in the cabin entranceway where the guy
put enough speakers to fill a concert hall (same in bulkhead). The rigging
seemed underbuilt and the forestay is frayed halfway up. Down below, there
is the usual water in bilge and it seems fair to okay looking forward
(besides holes in bulkhead) but looking aft there are unmarked new wires
everywhere and a huge hole where an engine once sat. This boat is a big
project boat, but the owner is ready to give her away. There seems to be
little rhyme or reason to the way the previous work was approached, but if
anyone is looking for a challenge and has the skillset to fix this boat up,
she could be a sweet boat. Oh yea, she is a shoal draft version drawing less
than 5 ft.
RE: [Cal_Boats] cal 36

Shame. Could have mounted the speakers to the back of the bulkhead with no holes, and resonated the whole boat. As a sub-woofer, the hull works very well. Could drive everyone else on the water nuts.
Those damn big round holes in the bulkheads are hard to fix in a pretty fashion. Anybody have ideas on how to do it best? Most pretty solutions involve painting. Then other parts look ugly. I have some bulkhead holes to fill and don't want to repaint everything. I am also abysmal at matching gelcoat - a true art when a boat is getting older.
Cheers

Oh yea, she is a shoal draft version drawing less
than 5 ft.

Speaker holes - mount a Dr. LED surface mount red/white light on both sides cabin and closet or head.

Timm, I was thinking about the exterior of the fiberglas bulkhead in the cockpit. Where one would typically mount compasses and the like. I've seen speakers mounted in weird places.

Teak or equivalent hardwood or starboard are the nicest solutions Ive seen
Charley. Filling then with glass and gel coat is a very precise type of work
as you know. Painting is rarely a good option unless you use a two part
paint system and do the entire decks and cockpit. That's both expensive and
a lot of work. For solutions that look good typically scower yachtworld as
there are a ton of images there. Symmetrical teak (or equivalent) well
varnished actually looks good pending your taste.

I make a disk of around 13 ply okume and glue it in with West 610 then fair it in with the west fairing filler. Once all soothed in I rattle can the bulkhead with white refrigerator epoxy. Un detectable.
Other solutions include a deck plate.
