There is a guy on the same dock with me, in San Pedro, with a nicely restored Cal 336. I had a look at it a couple of weeks ago. If you are in Southern California you might go by to have a look and talk to him. I also know of one in Richmond, in the Bay Area. Is that Cal in San Pedro a Cal 36 or a Cal Cruising 36? Do you remember the boats name or the owner? I'm trying to update my list. Larry S/V "Seastead" (Cal Cruising 36) Kemah, TX

Jim Mumper in Annapolis has a very nice 36 (not a C). Looks like a 40 with a butt tuck and double spreaders. He can also make it perform (an excelent sailor). He used to be on this list. Dave, I own 1966 Cal36 # 4. Great sailing boat. They will surf. Jim Mumper in MD tells me he hit 14 knts. I've done 9 knts. on SF Bay just reaching, no kite. Well built boats. I've had great luck with the folks at LayLine in No. Carolina. Talk to Henry Mallard if he's available. He'll know what to use on your 2-27. If Henry's not available, you can talk to just about anybody there. They are all quite knowledgeable. 1-800-542-5463; www.layline.com<http://www.layline.com/>. What we've found on Radiant that it is nice to have very good quality gear, but we take a little extra time to take good care of it. For example, we get extra years of service from our "good" halyards by taking them down and replacing them with tracer-lines if we're not going to be using them for a few weeks. It makes no more sense to leave good halyards out in the elements than it would to leave your sheets out. For snap-shackles, I really like the Tylaska's, as they can be opened and closed with one hand. Our halyards are tapered: 1/4" spectra for the working part (shapshackle to the winch), and 3/8" polyester for the tails. Yours, of course, would be smaller diameter. Henry will know. RE: [Cal_Boats] Spinnaker Sheets - Recommendations Input Wanted (All)

John Boyce2006-03-17 21:55 UTC
On my 2-27 I use a 3/8” Dacron line for my sheets, the one I have now is New England Ropes but I have used Samson on another boat, the feel on the hands is the most important thing, I also have a set of light weight sheets these are ¼” in diameter although some people I know use smaller diameter lines that turn into knives when the wind pipes up a little bit. On both sets of sheets I use a good quality snap shackle (Schafer?) a smaller one on the light air sheets. I place a disk on the line after the knot at the shackle to prevent the knot from being pulled into the Spinn pole fitting, a piece of ¼” Nylon sheet can be drilled with a 2” hole saw to make these. Tweekers are a wonderful addition to the running rigging for these I use holt-allen small snatch blocks led to the deck with 3/16” or smaller line through a Harken Bullet Block back to a cleat on the outside of the cockpit coming. I originally had 5/16” Sta-set X for my halyard I now use Sta-set since stretch didn’t seem like a major issue. My Spinn halyard was rigged internally for three weeks but as I hound that additional friction led to more difficulty dropping the chute it is now external. My Spin pole bridle is mostly made of wire but after getting some fishhooks in one section I replaced it with a piece of 1/8” line that is actually stronger than the wire, this has worked well for the last two seasons and I will be switch all of my bridle lines to this material as they wear out. Length of the boat plus 5 feet for each side. Don't use regular snap shackles on a spinnaker sheet or afterguy. Go the extra and buy trigger release snap shackles. They won't open on you when you don't want them to. Bill CAL T/2

RE: [Cal_Boats] Re: Spinnaker Sheets -No to snap shackles

John Boyce2006-03-20 00:56 UTC
I've been using snap shackles on my spin sheets and after 26 years I have never had one come open on a sheet, I have been on a boat where the Jib halyard came open due to too long of a lanyard and a loose halyard. The biggest problem we have is getting someone tall enough to reach the lanyard on the guy so we can blow the chute. The length must be more than twice the boat length so that a) you can easily relead the sheet and B) so you can get the trimmer out of the cockpit and balance the boat properly. The 227 diesel version is stern heavy and needs to get some weight forward. Ahoy Sailors and Listees, I just removed the boom from Magic.... It will be sanded down and repainted, however there are several screw holes from hardware that was removed/changed-out over the years by previous owners. I plan on closing them up before painting. Can these holes closed by welding, or is the boom too thin of a guage for that? Is thickened epoxy an option? Recommendations, suggestions, and/or comments are greatly appreciated. Re: [Cal_Boats] Boom Repair/Painting

Michael, I did this to my mast and boom last year. Took them to my shop and filled about 250 holes with my TIG welder. Some of the holes were 1" x 3" squares cut out for turning blocks and various stuff. Ground and sanded it all down and then repainted the whole 9 yards (actually 17) with 8 coats of the new interlux pefection 2 part LP process including a vinyl etching and 2 filler coats. It came out like a million bucks.... If you weld it, get the welder to do only a few hole at a time in any given area at a time so as not to build up the heat too much in the section. The aluminum will lose its temper a bit, but will come back with time hardening... Everyone in my marina thinks we have a brand new mast. Alan Storey Cal 3-30 'Chimera' Vancouver B.C. Charlie - Its a hike for you to get there, but when I was repairing the mast step in my old CS 30 I took a piece over to Composite Yachts, just your side of the Choptank Bridge and they hooked me up with a quart of gelcoat which they matched for me, 2 or 3 of those little sprayers and something else (I forget now what it was) for $20. I couldn't believe it. I literally walked in, spoke to the owner and he hooked me up with his paint guy right then and he did a little mixing and dried a sample and got it spot on the first try. I used to mix paint at an old hardware store before the computer matching machines and it is no easy task, especially with "off" whites. I think I was in and out in less than 20 min. When we first got California Girl, she too had a number of bulkhead holes to fill. The first two seasons, while I was selecting instrument heads and compass locations, I used a door skin, varnished both sides and just covered the entire bulkhead including holes. It actually looked very good, with stainless beauty screw “riveting” the panel on. Can’t find a photo of it.. but will look.
