Sick Westerbeke 30
mike.gavel2011-03-24 23:21
Hello All
the engine in my 1976 Cal 34 has finally given up I think. The engine seems to be seized up. I can not get it to turn over wwith a wrench on the front pulley even with the injectors removed. If you are out there Joe Demeres maybe you could advise whether to fix the old motor or upgrade to a engine that will adapt onto the existing transmission. I am eager to hear of anybodies advice as well. I am currently in the Cayman islands where things can be a bit difficult to get fixed. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I believe a W30 is based on a Mitsibushi engine. Westerbeke parts are available
but are dear$$. I rebuilt on a few years back using all internal parts from
Mitsibushi. I will check later and let you know.
Re-build vs. new engine = $$ vs $$$$$
Example: A complete rebuild kit for a Perkins 4-108 is less than $1,000 + labor
A replacement, new engine will be over $10,000 + install.

Hi Mike -
The transmission you probably have is a very outdated Paragon SAO. I
would advise that it is time to install a new, modern type transmission,
such as Twin Disc TMC 40.
Sounds like your engine needs replacement. I will contact you off list.

The old W30 is actually a Perkins 4-91 engine. These engines are OLD,
and parts are scarce.

If you don't have a service manual for your specific engine, just Google
the model along with the words "service manual" & you can probably find
a PDF version of the manual which will have a lot of the common
replacement part numbers. Doing another search with the part numbers you
are looking for usually .brings up sites selling those replacement
parts. Forget finding a shop that carries most of what you would need on
a typical service.
You can also dig around on this site & find a PDF manual for most
models: http://www.westerbeke.com/ (you can order parts from them as
well, but usually higher price than sites like Marine Parts Source
website once you know your part numbers). I think they have parts list
docs too, or you can call & ask for specifics. I was able to ask a
couple questions of a sales rep & he gave me what I needed on what I did
not see in the service manual.
Here is an example of finding parts: when I was looking for a fuel
filter, my part number off the service manual is: 298854. I Google that
along with the word: "fuel" and you get different parts websites. Lookup
a half dozen & browse around the site you find. I wound up ordering a
lot of my stuff from this one: www.marinepartssource.com
They carry a lot of the items I use for servicing my M4-30 Universal. I
was really surprised how many sites carry parts for Westebeke/Universals
Hope that helps -
Dyer

There are VERY few parts available for this engine. I bought the last-known-to-mankind heat exchanger gaskets for my W-30 last year. Forget internal parts. Just as tough is working on the Paragon transmission and Walther V-drive. I have the same arrangement in my 34, Mk-lll. I had the transmission rebuilt twice in the last two years. Never again.
Once mine quits running, I'll call Joe DeMeres for an engine replacement. I don't remember how he deals with the v-drive in his package but it's critical. There is no way, that I know, to install a new diesel without reversing it and using the v-drive in our two boats. I also plan on substantial cabinet work to get the old out and the new in. Plan on $15k. 'tis a grand boat and probably worth the expense.

I tried to find parts also using my mad web skilz but, you're right,
they are difficult to source. Short of cannibalizing another motor for
questionable parts, mahey be out of luck. Anyway, about your v-drive;
Walters <http://www.waltergear.com/vd.htm> is still in business and they
are very good about servicing their v-drives. Reggie, who has a
(glorious!) CC-36, sent his old v-drive to them and they rebuilt it 2
years ago. I think Tom Vandiver, also on this list, has a source for
Paragon transmission parts.
Cheers,
Mike M.

Thanks Jake. This looks like a really good site to order parts. I am removing the engine as it has to come out whether it is fixable or not. I started to take the hose and wires from the engine yesterday. I wonder if anyone knows why the engine mount that is the hardest to get to is the one that is rusted and corroded into a solid mass. It is the one closest to the Quater berth.I can only get one eye in through the sliding door in the side of the quater berth and one arm. I will keep posting my progress on this project Once again thanks to all who have responded to my post. This is a great group to be a part of.

Hello all. Just an update on my troubled engine. It turns out the bearings on number 1 connecting rod spun and siezed the engine. I have decided to get a new engine for my Cal 34. I know there are other westerbeke 30's out there so I am trying to offset the cost of the engine by selling the parts. Everthing else on the engine, including Paragon SAOV transmission and Walter V drive gear, appears to be in good shape. If anybody is in need just let me know.
Good sailing all!

If you dont mind, where are you located? You have an idea what you want for the motor?

Hi Gary
I am in the Cayman Islands. I thought the engine would probably sell in parts so I don't have a figure for the complete engine. I am open to offers though.
