Marine Tide and Weather site -- beta testers wanted

Allen Edwards2011-03-19 17:49 UTC
I have been working literally day and night on a new web site to give sailors weather and tide information all on one page and I am finally ready to share it with this group. I have done several weeks of beta testing with a couple of Coast Guard types and would appreciate having some more people check it out and give me feedback. One of my beta testers is active Coast Guard and I got a note yesterday that he used it on a rescue to quickly communicate the weather information. He likes that everything he needs is on a single page all easily customized to a specific location. Of course, many of the features were implemented at his request so it is not surprising that he likes it. That is one of the benefits of being a beta tester! I spent a lot of time making it easy to use. Location entry can be by city and state, or zip code, or even a tide station. For example, "San Francisco CA", "Golden Gate", and "94129" are all valid. You don't have to be exact because the next step is a map click to pinpoint the location. From there you go directly to the site all customized to that location. It can be customized further from the site as most sections have an "EDIT" link. I put together a short video explaining the site so if you are willing to give me some feedback and try out the site please take a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBY86TT3Sz4 (I welcome comments on the video as well). If you just want to try the site, go to http://L-36.com/ <http://l-36.com/> and click on the "weather" tab or go to http://L-36.com/weather<http://l-36.com/weather> Did I mention it is free? For my Canadian friends, unfortunately it is US only. Allen

Just a question....do you have a cap on your ISP account in terms of inbound and outbound traffic. You might be a bit surprised if you do. Just a friendly heads up. Most Canadians travel in the States so we/I appreciate your efforts very much. /ch On Sat, Mar 19, 2011 at 1:49 PM, Allen Edwards < al… [at] paloaltophoto.com>

Hi Chris, Unlimited BW on my ISP. It only caps disk space. That said, the page is computationally intensive and I am wondering if the day will come when I need to upgrade from my shared server account. I look forward to having that problem. I want to thank the half dozen or so of you who have tired the site and acknowledge that half of you found problems with it that will give me some things to work on over the next couple of days. Specifically, there are areas where you sail that I have not tested and you have stressed my marine zone algorithm to the breaking point. I will report back to the group when these issues are fixed. I am reporting back. I have fixed most of the problems those of you who tried the L-36.com/Weather page had so for from those of you who used it. For a list of what I did go to the page and click on the Bets 0.31 underlined link at the top of the page. I am in the process of adding Puerto Rico as it almost worked. The area discussion works now as does one airport. I need to add the tide locations and the sat images and will do that tomorrow. Going to the yacht club for St P dinner celebration. How do you spell Green Beer? I encourage more feedback if you want the site to work better for your location, let me know what you want. Cal 2-27 Strut

Michael D2011-03-21 20:28 UTC
Ahoy, Magic has been on the hard for the past month or so. Photos are here http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=290838&id=573217072&l=d2ca4e9af8 I had the bottom paint soda blasted off only to discover a failed barrier coat. That was then ground down to the fiberglass and left to dry before a new barrier coat was installed. It was followed by several coats of VC Offshore with sanding between applications. Don't ask how much this is costing, but I'll be happy to take donations. That being said, the strut is showing pitting and the metal has a pinkish color/hue. I have been advised that I should plan on replacing the strut the next time Magic is hauled for bottom paint. Does anyone here have source information as to the make/model/manufacturer of the strut? I would prefer to have a replacement on hand when the time comes. Thanks, Michael Duvall s/v Magic, Cal 2-27, #627, 1979 Pompano Beach, FL

Michael, I enjoyed the pictures. A few years ago I was in the same position as you. The VC tar barrier coat failed, I called the manufacturer and told him it was flaking off, his response was did you expect it to last forever. I now have Interlux 2000 for a barrier coat, When I looked at your rudder it seems to have a different shape than mine, with more of a curve on the leading edge and on the top. I'll take a picture of mine the next time I'm at the boat yard which should be soon now that the snow has melted. You also seem to have a feathering prop, I put a folding prop on about 20 years ago, to put it on I had to shorten the strut, shorten the shaft and take a bite out of the rudder. Your strut looks like mine used to. I'd be interested in knowing how far it is mounted from the rear. In my experience there are great differences from year to year in the trim of these boats. Boat is looking good from the underside. Have you considered replacing the rudder bearings with Jefa and also the propshaft cutlass bearing? If the PO did not tell you he replaced them, it's probably time. John, Before we launch, I'll take more photos and make a lot of measurements of the strut and its location. The new barrier coat is Interlux 2000E. Our prop is a 13" 2-blade Maxprop. It was installed by a PO.... when that was I have no idea. I installed the SS propeller shaft (replacing the bronze shaft) when we repowered in 2004. The strut and rudder are as they were when I bought Magic. It was in the 80's here today. I'm glad to know your snow is now gone. I just want to know if it is of interest to people or what changes would make it of interest. Of course, if it crashes I want to know that as well but I pretty much can see that from my log and have made several changes based on the testing you all have done. The main things I have done based on feedback from you all is: 1) Added Guam and V Islands (I think) 2) Added Hawaii 3) Cleaned up some issues associated with using the site away from marine zones (can you spell Kansas). 4) Added help for each section (in process - about 1/3 done) But I need a break so I am working on how to calculate polars with just a hand held wind meter, your masthead fly, and your knot meter. Anyone else interested in this? Allen On Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 2:03 PM, Wayne Gillikin <wa… [at] yahoo.com>wrote: > > > Very well done. Nick, Thanks for the suggestions. The cutlass bearing is new. I have an Edson stuffing box on the rudder post. When the time comes, I'll take a good look at what Jefa has to offer. Micheal, I replaced the strut on my CAL 29; Out Patient . The strut was manufactured by Martec. A buddy and I dived the boat and removeed it from the boat in the water and I mailed it back to Martec so they could do a mold of it. Martec is a small garage in Long Beach Ca. After it was done, I think I like some of the other designs I have seen. I tried to stay original, but it is bulky and cumbersome compared to what some of the local machinist have done on other boats. I mean it is cleaner and stronger looking. Michael I took some pictures of my rudder the differences look substantial, mine seems to be much smaller. In the pictures you had sent previously of your boat under sail I was surprised that you could sail with the boat heeled as much as the picture showed. On my boat I would have so much weather helm that the boat would slow down noticeably and slide sideways. There may be something in this design, then again it could just be the perspective from the different pictures.
